  1. I Will be Successful if..... Health Class; Mrs. Radwick By Michelle Kes

  2. Goal: My goal is to eat 8 to 13 fruits and veggies daily. I will start on Monday June 27,2010. Once i move in to the dorms and start eating in the cafeteria, I will be able to pick out fruits and vegetables. I will eat 2 fruits for breakfast, 1 fruit and veggie for snack time, 2 fruits for lunch and 2 fruits  and 1 veggie for dinner. My Balanced Diet Why:You need to eat nutritious food in order to get the vitamins ,minerals, and energy for your immune system to function properly.

  3. Exercises Goal: My goal is to exercise daily. While I'm at UB, I will exercise in Mr. Neighbor's class everyday for one hour. Also, I will exercise every Sunday afternoon by walking my dog for 45 minutes. Why:Not only will exercising keep you fit but it will also relieve tension.

  4. Maintaining my Optimal Weight Goal: I already have a good optimal weight. My height and weight reach the requirement of being healthy (BMI). To maintain my weight, I will exercise daily and eat smart. Starting today, I will take the stairs instead of using the elevator and by reducing portion sizes of meals. Anytime I find myself lazy, I'll remind that I wouldn't ruin my optimal weight. Why: When your weight is within a healthy weight range, your risk of getting diseases from having too much or too little body fat is low.

  5. Building Muscle Strength Goal: My goal is to build my muscle strength. Starting everyday in Mr. Neighbor's class, I will push myself to my limit when I'm doing resistance training. While doing the resistance training, I will try to see if I could use the exercise band for a one minute straight. Why: During weight training, muscles are challenged to contract more than they used to bring.

  6. Getting Enough Sleep Goal:I will sleep 8-9 hours everyday. On Sunday night, I will go to sleep at 10:00 pm and wake up at 6:00 am. Sleeping at 10 o'clock will give me exactly 9 hours of rest. Also, when bed prep starts at the dorms, I will go directly to sleep at 10, this will give me at least 8 hours of sleep. Feeling exhausted in the morning is not how I want to begin my day. Why:Not getting enough sleep can lead to exhaustion, which can cause illness.

  7. Building Confidence Goal: My goal is to have a higher self-esteem. Starting today, I will look on the brighter side of every situation I run into. Every time I feel insecure, I'll find one good thing about myself. Also, I can look back on things that I' am proud of; for example, I'm proud that I was able to take theater class and not back down. Doing this boosted my self-esteem. Why:People with high self-esteem respect themselves by taking care of themselves.

  8. pg.78-84 Reducing Stress Goal:My goal is to turn my stress in to positive stress (eustress). Starting today, I will reduce my stress. When I am in a stressful situation, I will approach it in a positive way.  Instead of saying that I can't do something, I will say that I can! A positive way to handle stress is by getting enough rest and eating right. Why:The better shape your immune system is in, the better it can defend you from stress related illnesses.

  9. Making Goals Goal:I will set up many goals that I hope to achieve. Making goals give you a purpose of doing something. When I face a tough situation, I will decide if it's worth it or not to set up a goal. But when making a goal, I will make it harmless, satisfying, and sensible. For example, one goal that I have set and was able to accomplished was getting an A in geometry; I was able to do so because I worked hard and studied everyday. Why: Once you reach your long or short term goals, you should feel good about yourself; knowing that you were able to accomplish it.

  10. Making Positive Decisions Goal:My goal is to make positive decisions throughout my life time. When I am stuck in a situation where I'm being pressured to do something, I will use my knowledge of do's and dont's to help me decide what's best. I want to make positive decisions that will support me in the long run. One that had made me healthier is by choosing the right friends that don't engage in any activity that can harm me physical, mentally, or emotionally. Why: Making positive decisions will make good impact on your health.

  11. Learning how to Compromise Goal:My goal is to compromise with my dad anytime he asks me to go over and visit my grandma, because I usually do not like going over to her place. I will agree to visit her when I'm not busy and when it's not a school night. And if I can't go on the day he asks me, I will suggest another day. I want my dad to know that I do love his side of the family and that I do have time for them. Why:When families communicate in a positive manner, the family strengthens as a unit.

  12. Having Great Relationships Goal:My goal is to have a great relationship with my mom. When we argue and bicker, I will listen to her side and try to see it from her perspective. After, I will sit her down and express my feelings toward hers'. I want to maintain a great relationship with my mom because she's the most important person in my life. A positive characteristic of great relationships is respect. Why: Healthy families are ones in which the family members learn to cope with difficulties and grow stronger because of them.

  13. Learning how to Cope Goal:My goal is to learn how to cope with family problems. Whenever my mom and I are in a difficult stage, I will go find a person that I can trust and talk with. A positive support person for me is my cousin Tina and when it's tough for me, I'll take her to a quiet place so that I can tell her everything. When I'm feeling angry, depress, or sad with my mom, I'll express my feelings and get it off my chest. I will also try to talk to my mom and solve the problem when it occurs. Why: Each member of the family will benefit if the problems are solved as soon as possible.

  14. Avoiding Alcohol Goals:I already don't drink alcohol. I don't ever want to turn in to an addict and think that drinking is my only solution. I will keep myself from drinking by not falling into peer pressure and choosing the right friends. Alcohol use affects the development of the brain. Instead of drinking alcohol, I will play a sport like tennis or golf two times a week, three hours a day; at the court or course. I will motivate myself by saying that it's better than drinking alcohol. Why: People who drinks alcohol can turn in to an alcoholism; a disease that causes a person to lose control of his or her drinking behavior.

  15. Tobacco Free Goal:I already don't smoke tobacco. I choose not to because I want to live a longer life and not have my family breathe in the secondhand smoke. It also increases the risk of hardened and clogged arteries; which can lead to a heart attack. Instead of smoking, I can do something fun like playing golf, or reading a book. I will avoid tobacco by going to a non-smoking area. Every time I find myself doing nothing, I will choose to do an activity that doesn't involve tobacco. Why:Smoking tobacco can cause bronchitis and emphysema (a respiratory disease in which air cannot move in and out of your lungs).

  16. Preventing Diabetes Goal:I will prevent diabetes from happening to me for the rest of my life. A lifestyle that causes diabetes is obesity but a way to prevent diabetes is exercising, and having a healthy diet. I will reduce my risk of getting diabetes by eating healthy, exercising regularly and reducing the stress in my life. Starting Wednesday, I will limit myself on eating sugar and try to live a healthier lifestyle while living at the dorms and after. Why: Diabetes will cause increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, weight loss and many more.

  17. Saying No to Heart Disease Goal: I already don't have a heart disease. Obesity is major risk factor of heart disease but ways to lower your risk of heart disease and strengthen the heart is by doing physical activity everyday. Starting tomorrow, July 8, 2010, I will do push ups and sit ups in my room. Also, I will try to jog a number of distance when I'm walking somewhere. I will motivate myself when I feel like giving up and not keeping physically fit. Why: A certain amount of physical activity everyday has been shown to keep you healthy and lowers your risk of certain diseases.

  18. Preventing Cancer Goal: I already don't have cancer. A lifestyle that will cause cancer is exposure to UV rays- out side or tanning beds. A lifestyle that reduce the risk of cancer is by taking care of your skin, eating your veggies, and staying active. Starting today I will put on sunscreen every time that I'm outside, eat most of my veggies at dinner, and do a 30 minutes activity daily. I will be more aware of how I take care of myself.  Why:Cancer begins when the way that the body normally repairs and maintains itself breaks down.

  19. A Healthy Reproductive System Goal:My goal is to keep my reproductive system healthy. A way to keep you're reproductive system healthy is by gently washing the genital area every day with warm water and mild soap. Starting today, I will keep good hygiene and avoid wearing tight clothing that can cause discomfort. I will do this every time I feel uncomfortable with myself and go to the bathroom to change the things in order to keep a healthy reproductive system. Why:The function of the female reproductive system is to make eggs and to provide a place to support and nourish a developing human.

  20. Not Engaging in Sexual Activity Goal:I already do not engage in any sexual activity. I choose to stay abstinence until I'm out of high school and is a responsible adult that has a better education. Being sexually active can give me STDs and unplanned pregnancy. Starting today, if my partner tries to pressure me in to having sex, I will hold my ground and say "No!" Why: By avoiding all sexual activities, an adolescent does not risk becoming pregnant or being infected with a sexually transmitted disease.

  21. Out Smarting the Media Influences Goal:My goal is to not let the media influences trick me into buying something. When I'm watching TV in my room and  run across a fast-food ad, I will stop and think to myself if it's actually benefiting me in any way.  I will always think twice about buying something after seeing a commercial. For example, I was watching a McDonald's commercial and it was trying to persuade me into buying a Big Mac. The positive spin of the ad was that it's cheap and it taste good, but it's not healthy for me because of all the sodium, calories, and sugar that is contain in the burger will get me fat. Why:Ads do not care about the side effects that can be cause, instead they care about selling their product more.
