  1. Ch. 6 Section 2 The Muscular System

  2. an organ that relaxes, contracts, and provides force to move your body • they work constantly • examples- heart, digestive system, lungs 1. muscle

  3. voluntary- muscles you can control, tire much more easily than involuntary muscles involuntary- muscles you cannot control consciously (heart, digestive muscles) 2. Types of Muscles 3. Classifications of Muscles skeletal muscle cardiac muscle smooth muscle

  4. 4. skeletal muscle • most common type of muscle • attached to bones by tendons • striated or appear to be striped • voluntary

  5. 5. cardiac muscle • found only in the heart • striated or striped • involuntary

  6. 6. smooth muscle • found in intestines, bladder, and blood vessels • non-striated (not striped) • involuntary • slowly contract and relax

  7. when one muscle contracts, its pair relaxes • muscles always pull, never push • muscles become larger or smaller depending on how much you use them 7. How do muscles work? 8. How do muscles get energy? • blood carries energy-rich molecules to muscles • as the muscle works, movement (mechanical energy) and heat (thermal energy) are released • the heat produced allows us to keep our body temperature constant
