As we continue working on linear equations, you will need to be able to determine both x and y – intercepts We can determine BOTH the x and y – intercepts algebraically when given a linear equation in the standard form Ax + By = C
Determine the x and y – intercepts for the equation: 5x + 2y = 30 -start by find the x – intercept. Think back to what the coordinates for the x – intercept are. ( x , 0 ) Since the coordinate for y is zero, we can substitute zero into our given equation in place of y!
5x + 2(0) = 30 NOW SOLVE FOR x! 5x + 0 = 30 x = 6 The x – intercept is ( 6 , 0 )
Now determine the y-intercept! HOW?! Sub in zero in place of x 5(0) + 2y = 30 0 + 2y = 30 Y = 15 The y-intercept is ( 0 , 15)
