  1. Grad Project Presentations EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

When You Walk IN…. • Either go over and shake judges hands and introduce yourself… • Set up your visual aid • Move to podium/lectern • Notice your time….begin speech • IF YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THE JUDGES…DO NOT START YOUR SPEECH WITH “Hello, My name is Dana Jernigan and I’m a senior at South Johnston High School.”

  3. Introduction • Must include (you choose your order) • Intro to research topic, product, and why you chose the two. • HOOK • Give a startling fact • Ask a question • Tell a short story • Thesis Statement: Today, I am going to discuss with you ____, ______, ______, and ______.

  4. Body • Chronological Order • Begin with research paper your junior year • Was there any special reason you chose this topic? • Discuss interesting things you discovered about your subject during the research. • How did your product come into fruition? How is your product an extension of your junior paper?

  5. Body • Now, begin with your senior year! • Discuss the process of your product from beginning to end. • Hints: REMEMBER YOUR PRODUCT PLAN, PRODUCT REFLECTIONS, PRODUCT LOGS • You can list the steps…Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 • While you are discussing the steps discuss any problems you encountered or success that you had.

  6. Body • USE a graphic organizer to help organize your thoughts. • Make sure you talk about your mentor here….

  7. Body • Last paragraph should state your learning stretch for judges… • Remember, Time Management is great, but make sure you reflect on how this was something NEW for you!

  8. Conclusion • Restate your primary objective in pursuing this topic. • Summarize your research connection • BIG Picture: What did you learn about yourself by completing this project? • What is your next step? Plans after high school? Do they relate to project? IF not, how will you use what you have learned in life?

  9. THANK THE JUDGES! • Ask them if there are any questions…

  10. DON’T FORGET • You must use a visual aid at some point in your speech. All of you will be different, but you all must have one! • Speeches must be a minimum 6 minutes and a maximum of 8! YOU cannot go over!

Clothing • Clothing Guidelines for Presentation, Professional Dress: • Attire should meet Johnston County Schools Student Dress Code. • Avoid jeans, shorts, athletic attire, T-shirts, leggings, flip-flops, etc. • Avoid excessive jewelry and earrings. Remember the limit of two for each. • Avoid excessively tight and/or baggy clothing. • Wear a conservative hairstyle. • Be well groomed and clean. • * Professional uniforms or industry dress may be worn with permission of the teacher

Clothing • Appropriate for Males: • Dress pants, dress shirts, tie (suggested) • Dress shoes and socks • Appropriate for Females: • Knee length or longer skirts • Dresses-knee length or longer • Pantsuits • Dress shoes • Note: Any student who has difficulty meeting these guidelines should discuss this matter with his or her teacher or counselor.

  14. We will begin in class presentations • Monday, December 3rd!

  15. Class Assignment Day 1 • Using my guidelines, you will begin writing your speech. You may choose the method that works best for you. • Outline form (must be detailed) p. 426 Writer’s Inc. • Note card form p. 427 Writer’s Inc. • Essay form p. 428-429 Writer’s Inc.

  16. Class Assignment Day 2 • Marking your speech: p. 430 in Writer’s Inc. • Curved line or italic……for additional feeling or emotion • Underlining or boldface….for greater volume oremphasis • Dash, diagonal, ellipsis….for pause—or break….in the flow • Brackets… for actions or [visual aid]

  17. Peer Review • Pick a partner…practice your speech. • Partner, using the rubric the judges will use, score your partner. Now we can see where we are, and plan for where we want to be! • Good Luck this weekend 
