  3. Example 1 • My dad is taller than me. Let d stand for the height of my dad in feet. I am 5 feet tall. Write the expression to show how much taller my did is than me. • Highlight important words • Let d stand for dad • I am 5 feet tall • How much taller • Determine what “How much taller” is asking you to do • Subtraction • Dad is taller than me • d-5 is my expression

  4. Example 2 • Lets say “f” stands for the number of fans there are at a Sacred Heart Soccer game. Each fan gets 2 thunder sticks each. Write an algebraic expression to represent the total number of thunder sticks given out at the soccer game.

  5. Each fan gets 2 sticks each, so we are putting the fans into equal groups of 2 • Therefore, we are going to multiply 2 and f to see how many thunder sticks are given out • Our expression is 2f
