  1. Impromptu Speaking “off the cuff”

  2. “It takes me three weeks to prepare an impromptu speech.” - Mark Twain

  3. Impromptu Speaking in Real Life • Being asked by your boss to give a project update at a meeting • Giving a toast at a special event • Accepting an award and being asked to say a few words • Other ideas?

  4. Rising to the challenge • Decide quickly what the key message will be • Jot down a brief outline of your main points • Write down your main point/thesis • Use specific examples, stories and personal experiences to highlight ideas • Decide how to transition from point to point • Craft a strong intro & conclusion • Start off with confidence • Don’t end with “and that’s all I have to say.”

  5. Methods to Determine Content • PREP Method – expressing an opinion • Point – Make your point • Reason – State your reason for making the point • Example – Give an example to justify your previous remarks • Point – Drive home the point again. Like back to opening. • Past, Present, Future Method – comments on a particular topic • Point – Make your point • Past – What happened in the past • Present – What is happening today • Future – What will/could happen in the future • Point – Drive home the opening point.

  6. Methods to determine content • Cause, Effect, Remedy • Before, The Event, The Result • Who, What, When, Where, Why and How • Good, Bad, Indifferent

  7. How to keep it flowing… • Take a deep breath • Take your time • If you go blank (often happens in transitions) – use a 5 second stall • “I have often wondered about that.” • “I am glad you asked that question.” • “Did you ever wonder…?” • Remember to get attention and introduce the topic • Connectives are a great way to keep your speech moving. Be creative & have fun.

  8. What if you draw a blank? • Pretend like you are pausing on purpose as if you are letting your last point sink in. • Try re-stating your last point or reviewing what you have covered. • Use the whiteboard to create a visual aid to reinforce your point.

  9. Techniques for delivering a better impromptu speech • Give yourself time to prepare. Take deep breaths. You don’t have to start immediately. • Feel confident. Look at the audience; smile. Speak and act in a confident manner. • Slow down your delivery to give you time to think ahead, and helps you reduce “umms,” “ahhs” and “likes.” • Be focused. Talk directly to the audience, and adapt to its feedback. Maintain good eye contact. Don’t ramble or say too much on any single point.
