Assignment • This is a formal research paper. • In formal writings, there are two main rules: • First person point of view is not appropriate • “I think” or “In my opinion” • Contractions are also not used • “Wouldn’t” must be written as “would not”
Assignment • Plagiarism will not be tolerated. • Plagiarism is a noun defined by Dictionary.com as: • The unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. • Intentionally plagiarized papers will earn a grade of zero and a student referral.
Assignment • Meaning: • Do not copy someone else’s writing! • If you write something that is word-for-word what someone else wrote, use quotation marks and cite your source. • If you paraphrase something, do not use quotation marks but still cite your source.
assignment • Your paper must be in MLA format. • You can find directions on how to set up a Microsoft Office Word document in MLA format on my website. • 1 inch margins, Times New Roman 12 pt font, double-space, heading, and TYPED • No handwritten papers allowed! • Include one or two blocked quotes (quotations over 4 lines long, indented 2x)
assignment • The paper will be 4-6 pages long. • The 4 page minimum means that your paper goes all the way to the very bottom of the 4th page! • You must have a Works Cited page…don’t worry, we will go over how to do that! • Your Works Cited page does not count toward the 4 page minimum. • If you have 4 pages, and the 5th page will be the Works Cited.
Assignment • You must cite at least 3 different sources in your paper. • Note: on the internet, a different page on the same website counts as the SAME source! • Sources must come from at least two different types of sources: • Examples of types include: website, encyclopedia, book, database, articles
assignment • Wikipedia, and other websites like it, DO NOT count as a source and are not allowed. • Those sites allow anyone to alter the information on them; therefore, you cannot trust that information.
assignment • Writing is a process, so we will go through each assignment, step-by-step, and each step has a deadline by which you must complete it. • This whole assignment is worth 125 points! This will affect your grade: if you want to pass the class, you must do this research paper. • Deadline dates are set, but they may change depending on how the lessons go. Notice of change of date will be given.
assignment • Rough drafts must be typed. • This way, you have everything typed already: you do not have to type it at the last minute for the final draft and you have fewer mistakes. • It is also better for you because when you have changes to make for the final draft, you can go in to the document, make the changes in a few minutes, print it out, turn it in, and YOU’RE DONE!

topics • You are to choose from the approved list of topics. • This is an American history paper: your focus will be on an American individual who played an important role in history/society. • Since there are more students than topics, I am not limiting to one topic per person, per class. • However, only two people can sign up for the same topic in one period, but each person must do their own paper!
More… • Meet at the library Thursday, Friday, and Monday. • No book checkouts until Monday. You may peruse books and biographies, but do not check anything out. This gives all classes time to look at resources. • If you print something, USE PRINT PREVIEW so that you don’t waste paper.
