  2. What is a Thesis Statement? • A thesis statement is a necessary part of every academic paper. • The thesis statement appears in the introductory paragraph of a paper.

  3. What is a Thesis Statement? • A thesis statementis one sentence which clues the reader in to the topic of the paper and the author’s position on the topic.

  4. What is a Thesis Statement? • Each body paragraph in the paper relates back to the thesis statement. • If a paragraph has nothing to do with your thesis statement, you need to re-evaluate and re-write the focus of that paragraph.

  5. Thesis Statement • On the next slide will be a thesis statement. • Analyze the thesis statement. Determine what is being said in the sentence. • Based on the thesis statement, identify the 2 major components: • Main topic of the paper. • The position of the author on the topic: what is the author arguing for? trying to prove?

You are supposed to decide on your opinion and what you will use to prove your opinion. • Put that information in 1 sentence. • You have your thesis statement!
