  1. Sentence Variety WS: Day 1 • Independent Clause = Sentence = Subject + Verb • Dependent Clause = Fragment • Starts with a subordinating conjunction • Ex. • Because weasel ran. • Now on DVD! • When I get up in the morning.

  2. Sentence = Subject + Verb • Command sentences = Imperative sentences • Fragment Detection – Is there a verb? Are you specific enough? • Subordinating Conjunctions demonstrate a dependent clause

  3. Sentence Patterns: • Simple • Compound • Complex

  4. Simple Sentences • Simple = Independent Clause = Subject + Verb • Ex. Billy chased the weasel.

  5. Compound Sentences IC + IC • 1) Comma + FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) • Billy chased the weasel, but the weasel eluded him. *Also, notice the use of the pronoun for sentence variety • 2) SEMI-COLON • Billy chased the weasel; the weasel got away.

  6. Complex Sentences: IC + DC • 1) IC DC. • Billy went to the store because he needed milk. • 2) DC, IC. • Because he needed milk, Billy went to the store. • 3) I, DC, C. • Billy, because he needed milk, went to the store.
