  1. - Adventures in Capitalization I see some letters that need capitalizing!!

  2. Welcome! You are about to embark on a capitalization adventure. Read carefully and follow all directions! Each time you see “Captain Capitalization,” click on him for directions. Follow along on the handout given to you.

  3. Capitalize names, their abbreviations, and titles/relationships used with names. Only capitalize family names like mom or dad if they replace someone’s name. Rule #1 My little brother had to visit Dr. Kellerman. Charlie and Mary Beth sailed happily along. Chef P.T. McPherson prepared an authentic Italian dish. I gave Mom a potted plant for her birthday. Katrina painted eggs for Easter.

  4. Capitalize geographical names that name particular places and sites. This includes specifically named locations and structures. Like...Pacific Ocean, Seattle, Washington, Highway 40, Mount Everest, Statue of Liberty, Golden Gate Bridge, and St. Louis Rule #2

On your worksheet, list the words that need to be capitalized (capitalizing them correctly)in the following sentences: (When finished, mouse click to move to the next slide!) • When visiting san francisco,don’t miss golden gate park. • Will the northwest tollway take us to lake geneva? • Ruth ann’s aunt lived in france for a year. • I received a card from aunt betsy and uncle jack. • My father asked grandmother if she would stay for supper. • We read a short story by e. b. white. • The principal invited lt. Williams to speak at the assembly. • We saw yosemite falls in california.

  7. Rule #3 Capitalize the names of historical events, periods, and documents. Like... Middle Ages, World War I, Magna Carta, Bill of Rights, Civil War, and Crusades.

  8. Rule #4 Girl Scouts McDonald's Bolling Plumbing United Nations Capitalize names of groups, organizations, businesses, and government bodies. Capitalize brand names, but not the products they describe. Indiana Pacers Congress Kiwani's Club Kodak film

  9. Rule #5 Capitalize the days of the week, months of the year, civil and religious holidays, special events, and the abbreviations A.M., P.M., B.C., and A.D. On Saturday, Mom does laundry. On Easter we hunted eggs. I would love to attend the Olympics. We get a lot of rain in April. The alarm went off at 7:00 A.M.

  10. Let's practice rules 3, 4, and 5! Please complete the following tasks, filling in answers on your worksheet. You may talk about and have the same answers, but each of you must fill out his/her own sheet! Please do NOT use the examples I gave you from the PowerPoint presentation. When finished, mouse click to move to the next slide! 9. List three historical events, periods, or documents. 10.List the name of a local business or restaurant. 11. List the name of one group or organization. 12. Write a sentence using a brand name (capitalized) and a product it describes (lower case). 13. List the seven days of the week, capitalizing them correctly. 14. Write down the month of your birthday. 15. List your top three favorite holidays. 16. Write a sentence, using P.M. in it.

  11. Rule #6 Capitalize proper adjectives, nationalities, races, religions, religious references, and religious holidays. Carefully read through the following list of words. On your worksheet, list (in the space at the bottom of your answer sheet) the ones that should be capitalized based on rule #6.   12. Rule #7 Capitalize the first word of each line of poetry and outlines. For example: Out walking the frozen swamp one gray day, I paused and said, “I will turn back from here. No, I will go on farther—and we shall see.” • Severe weather storms A. Tornadoes B. Hurricanes C. Thunderstorms D. Cyclones • Mild weather storms A. Snow B. Rain

  13. Rule #8 Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation and the first word of a sentence For example: Madison is a cheerleader. She attends every game. By day the bat is cousin to the mouse. The mine inspector yelled, “Watch out!” Elanor said, “I got your note.” Brutus said, “Friends, Romans, countrymen...”

  14. Capitalize the first word, last word, and all important words in titles. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone “The Monkey’s Paw” The Lost World Rule #9 Whata GirlWants Panic Room “The Simpsons” “Friends” “PopGoes the Weasel” “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” “Do You Believe in Magic?”

  15. Rule #10 Capitalize languages and school courses followed by a number. English, Spanish, German, French (Languages are always capitalized!) Algebra II, but not algebra History 152, but not history Science 350, but not science Advanced Art II, but not advanced art

  16. Capitalize the names of planets, stars, and constellations. Do NOT capitalize sun or moon, and only capitalize earth if it’s not preceded by the word the. Rule #11 Jupiter Venus the North Star Ursa Minor Little Dipper Mars Earth
