  4. What is oral maths? What is mental maths? Are they mutually exclusive? Where does paper maths come in?

  5. What is mental maths? • calculating without pencil and paper or concrete resources • recalling number facts in the four operations

  6. Mental maths strategies In a maths test Phoebe scored 87 out of 150. What was her percentage score? How did you work it out? How many steps? What mathematical operations were involved? What understanding of mathematical relationships does your strategy show?

Mental maths Expectations: Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems.
