  1. Maths Darts Project

  2. WALT for this project • This project will take you four lessons to complete. During this project, I would like you to demonstrate the following skills: • Being able to accurately calculate angles and measure these accurately with a protractor. • Being able to use a compass to accurately construct a series of circles when given the radius. • Being able to use a calculator to work out answers to an investigative style question. • Use metal maths skills to predict the outcome for a series of fictional darts games.

  3. Activity One: Make a Dart Board In this activity, you will be asked to construct a darts board on squared paper. To carry out this effectively, you will need to: • Work out the number of degrees for each section of the darts board. • Draw the circles for the darts board to make it exactly the size stated. • Make sure the numbers around the outside are in the correct sequence. • Colour the board in the correct way.

  4. Things to think about You need to make your drawing totally accurate. You will notice that the top segment does not have a line pointing straight upwards. Your dartboard must look like this when your page is upright (portrait). How will you make sure that this section is not centred? There are 20 sections on the board. How many degrees is each one? You will NOT be allowed to do this on another piece of paper and stick it on the right way!

  5. Things to think about You also have to make sure your darts board is exactly the correct size as stated below. • The outside line needs to be a radius of 10 cm. • The second line needs to be a radius of 9 cm. • The third line needs to be a radius of 6 cm. • The fourth line needs to be a radius of 5 cm. • The outer bull line needs to be a radius of 2 cm. • The bullseye line needs to be a radius of 1 cm.

  6. Things to think about To finish off your darts board, you need to put on the numbers around the outside and colour it in the correct way. Use the picture below to help you.

  7. Setting out your work Darts Board • Put the title and date on your paper. • Write this sentence on your paper and fill in the number of degrees that you will need to make each section. • Draw your darts board here. No matter how good your drawing is, if it does not match exactly the specifications here, it will be marked wrong! I will mark this using an OHT overlay to check that it matches the correct drawing. There are 20 sections on a dart board. This means that each section needs to be ________0. Draw your darts board here.

  8. Lets do one as an example. • Numbers in these sections are worth double (x2). This one would be worth 40. Write 40 in this space. 40 Activity Two: Mental Maths Exercise You will be given a blank darts board on a worksheet. You will need to fill in on this diagram how much each part of the board is worth. 20 60 20 • Numbers in these sections are worth single. This one would be worth 20. • Numbers in these sections are worth triple (x3). This one would be worth 20. Do the same in every section of the board. Do not forget to label the bull and the bull’s eye! You also have some questions on your worksheet. • Numbers in this section is a also worth a single.

  9. Activity Three: Out Shot investigation The third part of this investigation is to investigate possible ‘out shots ‘ that you can do in a games of darts. Out shots are the shots that you do to finish off a game. One thing that is vital to remember is EVERY GAME MUST FINISH WITH A DOUBLE BEING SCORED OR THE BULL’S EYE. This is multiple world champion Eric Bristow. Every professional darts player needs to have superb mental maths skills to be able to work out what to score to leave an ‘easy’ out shot.

  10. Activity Three: Out Shot investigation You will present your results for this work in the form of a table. You will need to draw a table which will look like this, with numbers from 160 down to 100: Make sure you record the results in the correct way. DO NOT write 60 but instead T20 (meaning treble 20). DO NOT write 40 but instead D20 (meaning double 20). DO NOT write 20 but instead S20 (meaning single 20).

  11. Activity Three: Out Shot investigation • Some things to remember: • The last dart thrown MUST be a double or the bull’s eye. • You do not have to use three darts in an out shot. • NOT every number can be achieved in an out shot. Part of the skill in this work will be to write NOT POSSIBLE in a row where it can’t be achieved. • Most scores will have multiple possibilities. You can earn bonus marks if you are able to suggest more than one combination to get that out shot. • You are expected to do more than is detailed on the sheet. The table you are given is to start you off. Use squared paper to carry on the work.
