Today’s Objectives • At the end of this section, you will be able to: • UNDERSTAND the importance of self-care and healthy choices • DISCUSS healthy choices that decrease cancer risk, specifically related to: • Nutrition • Physical Activity • Maintaining a Healthy Weight • IDENTIFY ways to prevent specific cancers

  6. Talking with family and friends about healthy choices is important. Support each other in living healthy and happy lives!

  7. The ABCs of Healthy Choices A = Add What can I add at this time, on this day to improve my health? B = Better What better choice could I make? C = Change What change could I make to be healthier? What do I want or need to do to act on this?

  8. What healthy choices can I make to help prevent cancer?

Eight Healthy Choices These healthy choices may prevent 2 out of 3 cancers: • Eat 2 to 2½ cups of fruits and vegetables every day. • Keep physically active. • Maintain a healthy body weight. • Choose not to use tobacco. Avoid secondhand smoke. • Decrease alcohol intake or do not drink alcohol. • Protect your skin from the sun. • Protect against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). • Have recommended cancer screening exams.

  12. Self-Care • Self-care means looking after yourself in a healthy way. • When we take better care of ourselves, it makes it easier for us to take better care of other people.

  15. Nutrition • Today, we continue to learn more about the connection between good nutrition and good health. • Between 30% - 35% of cancer risk is related to an unhealthy diet. • Many types of cancer may be prevented by eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight.

  17. What can I do to eat healthier? What are some of the challenges that I have faced while trying to eat better?

  18. Physical Activity • Staying physically active has many benefits. • It is ideal to be physically active for 30 or more minutes every day.

  19. Physical activity is associated with an overall: • 10% to 30% decreasein risk of prostate cancer • 30% to 40% decrease in risk of breast, endometrial (the lining of the uterus) and lung cancer • 40% to 50% decrease in risk ofcolon cancer

  20. How can I get physical activity? What are some of the challenges that I have faced when trying to integrate physical activity into my life?

  21. Maintain a Healthy Weight Balancing the amount of food we eat with daily exercise will help us maintain a healthy weight and reduce our risk of cancer.
