  2. A review… The Renaissance and Reformation were a period of great change. The Renaissance was the rebirth of the… …classics. (Greeks and Romans) The Reformation was the change in… …the Catholic Church. While these two movements were taking place, another movement was also happening that would change how people viewed their physical world.

  3. Physical world: Having to do with nature. • Before 1500, scholars decided what was true or false by consulting works of the ancient Greeks or Romans, or the Bible. • Few challenged these ideas. Middle Ages: (people believed that…) • Earth was immovable and was the center of the universe. • The sun appeared to move around the earth, so they believed that all the planets revolved around the earth.

  4. GEOCENTRIC GEOCENTRIC GEOCENTRIC Geo: earth, soil, ground Centric: centered around GEOCENTRIC THEORY: The belief that the earth is the center of the universe.

  5. The Renaissance and Reformation, in Europe, opened European minds to new ways of thinking. • In the mid 1500’s, a few scholars published works that challenged the ideas of ancient thinkers. This led to the… Scientific Revolution: A new way of thinking about the natural world.

  6. Open your books to page 624. Individually, or with a partner, read the section A Revolutionary Model of the Universe. Once you have finished reading, complete the Heliocentric Theory part of the handout.

Wrote a book that showed he supported the Copernicus theory. 1609 Significance to today’s world: The Heliocentric Theory changed the way we understood our world. We were no longer the center, but just a part of the universe.
