  1. Population of India Geographic Concepts

  2. Topics Population Distribution Population Diversity Population change Population Migration Population Sustainability

  3. Population Diversity Composition of India's Age, Sex and Ethnicity in the population

  4. Religious Diversity How does it effect population? • India is home to over 12 main religions, having the largest population of Hindus, and third largest Muslim population • Dominance of men in religion • Reluctance to use contraception Why is the population so young ? • Having more children due to religion (sign of cultural fertility) • Culture against contraception • Future benefits in farming families (especially males)

  5. Although India has some of the largest cities in the world. The population in mostly situated in small rural villages It is estimated that over 71% of India's population in located rurally in the country.

  6. Population Distribution How is the population spread across India's landscape, and why?

  7. Distribution Map

  8. Map summary: In the red it is shown where in India the population is very dense, an observation to be made is that this dense population is located mostly around coastal areas. Other areas where population is dense. Are around major cities, and along to both sides of the Ganges River. This is because around these areas there is a selection of resources such as fertile land, water and social benefits. People are located here because a better style of living and opportunity is offered

  9. Population Change • Change in India’s population totals, age-sex structure & natural increase

  10. Shown in this graph is and example of how Total Population Change • The taps flowing into the bath represent the population coming into the country, and the evaporation and drainage represents people leaving the country. • The blue line of water represents the total population The two factors that make up Total Population Change, and natural increase= births – deaths and Net migration= immigration – emigration.

  11. India's Total Population Change Although India has one of the highest populations, its birth rates are dropping due to efforts by the government by offering family planning's. India is currently growing at a rate of 1.7% and although the speed of the total growth of the population has slowed, it is estimated that India will become the largest population by 2050, at which time it will overtake china. India is suffering form huge population problems due to the total population being at over 1.18 billion. Its population has almost tripled in the past 50 years.

  12. Population Migration Migration of the Indian People including External and Internal Migration

  13. Migration Types In India Internal migration/ immigration : External migration/ emigration : People migrating/moving into or around India Indians moving out of the country • Examples • Rural/urban drift: Indians leaving the country and moving to cities • Marriage migrations: arranged marriage • Examples • Labour emigration: unskilled workers • Refugee migration

  14. Push pull factors for India Pull factors/immigration : Push factors/ emigration : • Chain migration: family • Social/cultural factors • Religion • Religious/Racial conflict • Natural disasters • Poor living conditions • Job opportunities

  15. Rural Drift Rural/ urban drift is India's main source of migration, it when Indian people move from their farms in rural areas(country) and into urban areas(cities) City Destination Country origin Main flow Obstacles • Obstacles: • Transport • Family/friends : push factors : pull factors

  16. Population Sustainability The capacity of the environment that can support and endure a future population

  17. Population Sustainability mean that a country's environment is able to support future generations of the country's population • Can India support its growing population? • At this moment, India's population is growing at a rate of about 1.7% • Although this is lower than it was, India's population is at 1.6 billion, and growing. • One of India's main problems being sustainable in the future is to do with Resources, mainly water. • Agriculture is one of India's sources of production, as well as being needed to feed the population, but India's agriculture uses up the most fresh water. • This will in the future cause problems for the sustainability of India due to the amount of food the growing population will need to survive, but fresh water availability is not increasing and there will most likely be less. This will block India from continuing to feed the growing population, making the agricultural aspects of India, unsustainable for the future.
