  9. Immigration 1020 Student Responsibilities – Enrollment and Academic Standing • Full-time enrollment - fall and spring semesters • Undergraduate = 12 credit hours • Graduate = 9 credit hours • Enrollment may include up to 3 hours by distance learning (online) • May take a class at other school – Must have permission from ISS first for ALL classes taken outside of UW! • Reduced Course Load may be allowed for medical/mental health reasons. Any drop below full-time MUST be approved by ISS first! ISS will update SEVIS prior to the student dropping a course. Ask ISS if you have a concern! • Remain in good academic standing (2.0 undergraduate, 3.0 graduate) and make normal progress toward your degree. Students get one semester of academic probation to improve, then they are placed on academic suspension. This means the student cannot enroll in classes at UW and international students would no longer be permitted to work at UW. Contact ISS if you suspect academic trouble! • Attend all classes and meet regularly with your academic advisor. Class participation can make the difference between passing and failing your classes! YOU are responsible to know your regulations and maintain your status. WE are here to help.

  10. Immigration 1020 Student Responsibilities – Documents and Forms • Do not let your passport expire while in the United States. Start the renewal process early! Provide a copy of any new passport to ISS. • Bring I-20 or DS-2019 to ISS for a travel signature AT LEAST ONE WEEK before leaving the US. Check your visa expiration date before you travel and take additional documents with you for visa renewal. Visa CANNOT be renewed/extended within the US. • Submit your I-94 printout/card and visa to ISS upon your arrival back in the United States. Bring them to ISS or scan and email to ISS staff. • Keep all immigration documents in a safe place and never throw them away, even if you get a new I-20 or DS-2019. ICE states that you should carry your original documents with you at all times.

  11. Immigration 1020 Student Responsibilities – Reporting and Information • Report your physical presence to ISS at the beginning of EVERY fall and spring semester. You will receive email reminders each semester to complete the online SEVIS check-in process. • Report all changes to your local address, email, or phone number to ISS no more than 10 days after the change. Online surveys available on ISS website. Also, update your address in WyoWeb. • Read ALL emails from ISS staff, including the weekly Talking Stick e-newsletter. You are REQUIRED to check your UW email every day! Like the ISS Facebook page for instant updates and reminders. • Ask questions about registration and USCIS regulations before you act. Avoid Googling your question or relying on friends for immigration-related information. Everyone’s situation is different! • Contact ISS staff for small concerns before they become BIG problems!

  12. Immigration 1020 Student Responsibilities – International Students and the Law • Do not work illegally while in the U.S! Illegal employment includes receiving any compensation - money/cash, gift cards, free rent, etc- in exchange for any kind of work. Ex: Babysitting, shoveling snow, helping someone move furniture, regularly selling items online/home businesses. • Do not become involved in any illegal activity! Some activity can cause your visa to be revoked, or prevent you from renewing your visa or re-entering the US! High risk activities include anything involving drug or alcohol use, weapons, physical assault/fighting, etc. This includes marijuana use – even in Colorado or other states where it is “legal”. • Pay all tickets on time! If you get any kind of ticket (speeding, illegal parking, no car insurance, etc) pay it on time. If not, a warrant will be issued for your arrest and you could even be arrested on campus. • Continue to check the email account that you gave on your visa application. This is how the US Consulate will contact you if there is a problem with your visa while you are in the US.

  13. Immigration 1020 ISS Staff Responsibilities What ISS will do to help you remain in status while at UW. • Keep the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) updated with information as provided by the student. • Provide counsel and materials relevant to immigration matters. • Help students find appropriate resources when experiencing personal or academic challenges. • Assist students in maintaining their immigration status; including monitoring enrollment, academic standing, and employment hours. • Act as a liaison between international students/scholars and UW campus departmentsor others. • We are NOT the police or Immigration and Customs Enforcement! We do not report information to USCIS/ICE unless we are required to do so by law, as mentioned above. We will keep confidential discussions confidential unless the situation requires attention from another resource.

  14. Immigration 1020 What happens if YOU do not maintain your immigration status? • Your SEVIS record/immigration status may be terminated. • On-campus employment will be terminated and other work authorizations may be revoked immediately. • Will not be eligible to change to another non-immigrant status or adjust to Permanent Residency, or apply for work authorization after completion of your degree. • Difficulty or possible ban on returning to the U.S. in the future. • Subject to arrest and deportation from the U.S. • You worked hard to get here. Make sure you can stay here!

  15. Employment in the U.S. On-Campus Employment • On-campus: duties performed on the UW campus, usually paid by UW • Must be maintaining status, including full course of study • Does not require permission from USCIS • J-1 visa holders must have permission from ISS before beginning work • No more than 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters • Monitored by ISS each pay period • Violation of this regulation may result in termination of status • No USCIS hour limit during winter, spring and summer breaks, but work must be on-campus without other work authorization. UW may have a limit on the number of hours students can work during breaks.

  16. Employment in the U.S. Off-Campus Employment F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) • Approval processed by ISS • Requires approved UW-supported internship • Must be a full-time student for one academic year to be eligible • Limit 20 hours/week during fall and spring semesters • Must remain enrolled full-time F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) • Approval processed by USCIS • Generally post-graduation/completion work related to your field of study • May have pre-completion OPT before graduation if the opportunity does not fit the CPT requirements J-1 Student Academic Training • Approval processed by ISS, or agency that issued DS-2019 • Length of training allowed depends on whether student is degree seeking, level of degree, or on student exchange • Training/employment must be connected to degree being pursued at home • MORE INFORMATION ON THE ISS WEBSITE, OR CONTACT ISS!

  17. Employment in the U.S. Unforeseen Severe Economic Hardship • Based on an unforeseen change in financial support after arrival in the U.S. • Approval processed by USCIS • Application requires documentation of change in support and proof of severe economic hardship to the student, as well as proof that on-campus employment is not available or adequate. • Must be a full-time student for one academic year to be eligible • Limit 20 hours/week during fall and spring semesters • May work more than 40 hours/week during winter, spring and summer breaks • Employment does not have to be related to area of study • Employment may be on or off campus • Must remain enrolled full-time and maintain immigration status • For all off-campus employment types: • DO NOT begin working until AFTER approval documents are received from ISS (I-20 or employment letter) or USCIS (EAD card) • DO NOT violate the terms of the employment – may lead to loss of status • MORE INFORMATION ON THE ISS WEBSITE, OR CONTACT ISS!

  18. Employment in the U.S. Social Security – What is an SSN? Do I need one? • Social Security Number is a federal number assigned to individuals who are employed in the US so that they can file their federal tax documents • The “temporary SSN” assigned by UW Human Resources may NOT be used off campus for any reason • Must have a job in the U.S. in order to get a Social Security Number • If you work in the US in 2019, including Grad Assistantship, you MUST apply for an SSN before December 31, 2019. • Students must have an employment letter from their employer and a confirmation letter from ISS before they can apply for an SSN • ISS will take busses to the Social Security office in Cheyenne on March 7th. You will need to sign up at ISS – watch your email for info! • If you cannot go on the bus trip with ISS, you may go to Cheyenne on your own, but not before March 1st. You must apply in person.
