  1. Getting Started in Portrait Photography

  2. Photographers will want to take portrait shots one day or another and as easy as it may seem to snap pictures of people’s faces, you have to realize that it is so much harder than that. You, as a photographer, will want to get the best play of light and shadows to truly get the effect you want in portrait shots and this means a lot of practice with your camera and a choice of lenses and even tripods. Play around with lenses and even invest in Vanguard tripods Australiaor Gitzotripodssince they will give you more freedom as you take portrait shots.

  3. Alter your perspective- portrait shots that follow the rules look good but the ones that look their best are the ones that break said rules. You can take portraits at eye-level and get good results (try taking out your vanguard tripods and take a self-portrait at eye level!) but try to get up high and shoot from the top. You will be amazed at how a change in angle changes the mood and composition of your pictures. Steps to take smashing portrait photos

  4. Eye contact- most subjects will look straight at the camera and that is a great way to connect with the viewer but why not have your subject look somewhere else? If you want to give this a try, you can use Gitzo tripods to hold your camera and you can take self-portraits with yourself looking off-cam or looking within the frame. Practice until you get it right and then call on your subjects to practice it with them.

  5. Experiment with lighting- taking great pictures is about how you play with light and shadows and you can come up with hundreds of ways to play with light so you can introduce something new to your portrait shots. Try side-lighting to create a mood or backlighting to hide the faces of your subject and send a powerful message • Take your subject out of their comfort zone- the usual head shots can be boring even if they look good so why not let your subject do something new as you take their portrait shots? Jump shots are great for shaking things up.

  6. Indeed, it is a great idea to learn how to take portrait shots that are out of the ordinary. If you want to make such shots your specialty, invest in the necessary camera lenses and tripods to make your job easier.
