  3. Our Team Policy • Discipline • * Our team philosophy is simple. We believe in one key ingredient and that is RESPECT! • * We teach respect by modeling it daily in our classrooms, so we expect nothing less from all of our students.

  4. Community of Caring Our school has adopted the Community of Caring philosophy. This philosophy has five core values that all staff and students follow. Those five values are: RESPECT CARING RESPONSIBILITY TRUST FAMILY

  5. Daily Schedule • Block 1 – Content (Math, Science/SS, LA/Reading) • Mod 3 - Unified Arts/ Curr. Ext. (4 Day Rotation- ABCD) • LUNCH - 10:22-10:58 • Block 2 - Content (Math, Science/SS, LA/Reading) • Block 3 - Content (Math, Science/SS, LA/Reading) • Mod 7 - Unified Arts/ Curr. Ext. (4 Day Rotation- ABCD) • Block 3 cont. – finish content class/ Snack

Daily Materials • Binder containing the following: • AGENDA BOOK • Folders labeled for each subject (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Home, Unified Arts) • Pencil case • Math & Science notebooks • Language Arts binder • All needed handouts, worksheets, packets ** LOCKER CHECK LIST **

Grades • Interims: • Given to students halfway through each marking period & should be signed and returned to HR teacher • Report Cards: • Four marking periods - Sent home with child & the envelope must be signed and returned • Parent Portal: • UMASD website ( Click on For Parents) • Sign-up at the administration building with ID

Welcome to Science We will alternate units throughout the year Science: Harcourt text and Hands on Investigation Approx. 90minutes broken into whole group instruction, hands on, individual and group work. Within each content unit, focus on problem solving & INQUIRY skills (compare, infer, use numbers, predict, interpret data, classify, etc.) Utilize guided note packets and booklets, non-fiction reading strategies, & study skills Complete Investigations & Experiments- Group, pairs, individual Textbooks stay in classroom- may take one home if requested Mrs. Katelyn Colden Room 124

Science Topics of Study Scientific Method, Environment, Ecosystems, Cycles (Life, Water), Earth Structure and Change, Natural Resources, Conservation, Cells, Energy, Sound Waves… Expectations Students should be prepared, pay attention by listening and participating, ask questions, and be respectful to classmates. Students should utilize the GREENscience folder to be organized. They are responsible to keep their science notes and papers. Completion of class work- notes, investigations, participation Nightly review of class notes and any written homework- I do give pop quizzes!

  14. Science Grading Tests & quizzes Investigations- Procedure and packet Notes packets- looking for completion, 10pts. per page. Projects Study Skills- HW and to earn extra points on tests- make a study skills example. Hand in the example on the day of the test. Sheet is stapled into agenda. Look for graded papers in the HOME folder. Do not need to be returned unless noted on test (usually a lower grade). Sign up for access to grades online at Admin building!

America’s Past Program • Highly engaging as students are active participants • Role play & simulations • Group projects & writing activities • Games & movement • Materials: Text and Interactive Notebook (packet) • Curriculum Units: Geography, Early Americans, Age of Exploration, European Settlements, The 13 Original Colonies, Slavery, Reasons for Revolution • Grading: Daily activities & class work, Interactive Notebook, formative assessments (pop quiz, exit quiz), summative assessment at end of chapter (test or project)

Social Studies expectations • Students should be prepared, pay attention by listening and participating, ask questions, and be respectful to classmates. • Students should utilize the BLUEsocial studies folder to be organized. They are responsible to keep their papers. • Completion of class work and all homework • Completion of any work that was not finished in class.

  30. How can families help? • Pencils! Check every night that your child has 2 sharpened pencils! • Sign agenda after your child has shown you his /her homework • Folder clean out - we will do this in class with your child  Please don’t get rid of anything for them! • When your child is absent- inquire to pick up the missed work. **Ask your child to talk to you about what happened in each subject that particular day!
