  3. Claire’s Journey

  4. The Starting Point … • Claire…asked for help (July 303) • TCA made contact within 2 days of referral • Worker presented with a range of complex issues, including issues around accommodation/ family relationships • Request made to SWD for allocation • TCA assessment initiated

  5. The journey continues… • Accommodation arrangements break down, Claire homeless (mid Dec 2003 • Foster placement arranged beginning Jan 2004 • TCA in regular contact with Claire, offering crisis support and advocacy • Placement broken down, no allocated SW (April 2004)

  6. The last few miles… • From bad to worse…accommodated in hostel • Low level of contact with Statutory Workers • TCA encouraged and facilitated contact with parents • Low mood and increase in drinking

  7. Turning the Corner… • Back to Dundee • Move into temporary tenancy • Built bridges • TCA involvement ends….but the journey continues….

Speedy response Sticking with it Needs defined level of contact Listening Availability & OOH support Involving the YP in decisions concerning them A ‘whole person’ approach Dealing with underlying issues Support remaining in place for the right duration Not so good…. Frequent changes of worker Not being listened to Not having somewhere safe to stay Not being involved in decisions in matters affecting the YP Lots of different workers for different ‘problems’ Support being withdrawn too early Meetings being cancelled The Good & The Bad…

Making a Difference in Dundee …Key Service Achievements • Broad referral route, including significant self-referral element across the services • Speedy response to referrals • Clear evidence of effective engagement with service • Range of evidence based effective interventions • Robust systems for practice supervision and ethical service delivery • Capacity built through extensive volunteering programme • Service User involvement • Effective integration with key statutory service providers

  10. Making a Difference in Dundee … “”They listened when no-one else would. It has really helped me understand that mum’s drinking isn’t my fault” young person aged 12 “they were there when other people were not, after 5 and at the weekends. If I had to leave a message I always knew my worker would get back to me young person, aged 15 “the (LINK) Project has helped me to not go down the same road as some of my friends who are now in loads of bother, using drugs and stuff” young person, aged 15
