  1. Radio English Practical English 2

  2. Day 9 • Radio Checks • Radio Silence

  3. Radio Checks • Why do we do radio checks? • We have just finished repairing our radio and we want to know if it works. • We've just turned on the power to our ship and ready for a mission. Check the radio to see if it works. • You don't hear traffic. • You think that no one hears you (because you make calls and no one seems to respond).

  4. Radio Checks • You must NEVER do radio check on VHF Channel 16 (158.8 MHz). Why? • It is the International Distress, Safety, and Calling channel • What should we use instead? • Choose a working channel.

  5. Radio Checks • What is a working channel? • A working channel is a channel on which you conduct business and have conversations. • What can happen if I do a radio check on VHF Channel 16? • The USCG will issue you a ticket with a fine (monetary penalty).

  6. Radio Checks • What are some working channels we may use to do a radio check? • 157.1 MHz (Channel 22A) if you are talking to USCG • 156.45 MHz (Channel 9) • 156.65 MHz (Channel 13) • 156.375 MHz (Channel 67) *Gulf of Mexico • These channels listed on page D-3 • What's the working channel near Korea?

  7. Radio Checks • Two categories of how well a signal is received • Signal Strength • How strong or loud a signal • Readability • How clear the voice is.

  8. Radio Checks • Signal Strength • Loud: Strong signal. • Good: Good signal. • Weak: Can hear, but with difficulty. • Very weak: Can hear, but with great difficulty. • Fading: Signal alternates between strong and weak.

  9. Radio Check • Readability • Clear: Excellent quality. Readable: Good quality. Distorted: Trouble copying. • With interference: Trouble copying due to interference. • Intermittent: Signal alternates between readable and unreadable. • Unreadable: Quality is so bad transmission cannot be understood.

  10. Answering a Radio Check • Radio checks should be answered with “ROGER” • if the signal strength is LOUD or GOOD, and readability is CLEAR. • Otherwise, use a signal strength and readability combination.

  11. ROGER situation • HANNARA – THIS IS HANBADA – RADIO CHECK – OVER. • HANBADA – THIS IS HANNARA – ROGER – OVER. • HANNARA – THIS IS HANBADA – ROGER – OUT.

  12. Another situation • HANNARA – THIS IS HANBADA – RADIO CHECK – OVER. • HANBADA – THIS IS HANNARA – I READ YOU WEAK BUT READABLE – OVER. • HANNARA – THIS IS HANBADA – MY SIGNAL IS WEAK BUT READABLE – OUT.

  13. RADIO SILENCE • Two reasons to impose radio silence • Military safety • E.g. you think North Koreans are listening • MAYDAY situation • A ship needs rescuing. • We’ll discuss this in two weeks or so.

  14. Imposing Radio Silence • ALL STATIONS (repeat 3 times) - THIS IS (repeat voice call sign 3 times) - SILENCE (repeat 3 times) - 2670 kHz - I SAY AGAIN - ALL STATIONS (repeat 3 times) - THIS IS (repeat voice call sign 3 times) - SILENCE (repeat 3 times) - 2670 kHz – OUT

  15. About Radio Silence • Can only be issued by a competent authority • E.g. Ship’s captain • SILENCE is pronounced “SEE-LONCE” • Because it comes from French • Why end with “OUT” instead of “OVER”? • NO ONE should respond. You’ve just told them to be silent.

  16. Lifting Radio Silence • ALL STATIONS (3 times) - THIS IS (voice call sign 3 times) - SILENCE LIFTED (3 times) - 2670 kHz -OUT
