  2. Day 6 • Spelling (SPELL/I SPELL) • Mixing letters and numerals

  3. Spelling • Sometimes a word is hard to understand • Sometimes you don't know how to pronounce a word • So, we spell it.

  4. Spelling PROWORDS • SPELL • You don't understand the word you heard, and you want the speaker to spell it letter by letter. • I SPELL • Someone requested that you SPELL a word, and so you are doing it. • You assume the listener won't understand, so you spell it without being asked • You don't know how to pronounce the word, so you spell it.

  5. SPELL • You hear a word that you don't understand. • Call the sending station and ask to spell. • Example • “This is training ship Hanbada. Over.” • “SPELL word after 'ship.' Over.” • Now the original sender will spell the word for you.

  6. I SPELL • In previous example, you heard “hanbada” but couldn't understand. • “THIS IS training ship HANBADA. OVER.” • “SPELL word AFTER 'ship.' OVER.” • Now the original sender sends the word letter by letter. • “HANBADA – I SPELL – HOTEL ALFA NOVEMBER BRAVO ALFA DELTA ALFA – HANBADA. OVER.”

  7. I SPELL You are Korean and you know the listener is not. So, you can assume that he might not understand your pronunciation. Example THIS IS training ship HANBADA – I SPELL – HANBADA - HOTEL ALFA NOVEMBER BRAVO ALFA DELTA ALFA – HANBADA. OVER.

  8. I SPELL • You must read a word from a written message and you don't know how to pronounce it. • Example:You don't know the word “Saginaw” • “ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS. THIS IS TRAINING SHIP HANBADA. WE ARE MAKING WAY AT ONE-FIVE KNOTS; HEADING NINER-ZERO TOWARDS – I SPELL -SIERRA ALFA GOLF INDIA NOVEMBER ALFA WHISKEY – POINT. OVER.”

  9. SPELL/ I SPELL • You DO NOT spell common acronyms. • ETA • ETD • GMT • UTC • MPH • Etc... • These are very common, so we don't spell them.

  10. SPEAKING PRACTICE SPELL any word that you can think of. Your name. The things on your desk. Any word. Spell it phonetically. Example: Hey, Giho. You are UNIFORM GOLF LIMA YANKEE. (He spelled “ugly.”) Make it fun.

  11. Mixing Letters and Numbers • Every ship has a call sign. Call signs are letter or number combinations. • Example: • Ship's name: Blackbird • Ship's call sign: 69CF • “THIS IS BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD SIX-NINER CHARLIE FOXTROT. OVER.”
