  1. Chapter 5 Assessing Leadership and Measuring Its Effects

  2. Chapter Goals • The goal of this chapter is to explain how leadership research is conducted, gain an appreciation for some of the practical applications of this research, and sharpen critical thinking skills about leadership and leadership research.

  3. Chapter Goals Cont. • Wait – Why do we care about the research? • The findings of leadership research will be emphasized throughout the book. • It’s helpful to know the limitations of personal opinions as the primary basis for assessing leadership effectiveness.

  4. Two factors to consider when assessing leadership: • The researcher’s own definition of leadership will dictate what will be assessed in any given study. • The general assessment technique will dictate what is being studied.

  5. Most Common Assessment Techniques • Interviews • Observations • Paper-and-pencil measures

  6. Methods of Measuring the Effects of Leadership • Past performance appraisal ratings • Ratings from subordinates of their level of satisfaction or the effectiveness of their leader • Unit performance indices

  7. Leadership practitioners should understand the difference between maxims and theories of leadership • Maxims are personal opinions that can give leaders valuable advice about leadership. However since they are personal opinions, different sets of maxims can give conflicting advice and there is not systematic way to test them.

  8. Leadership practitioners should understand the difference between maxims and theories of leadership Cont. • Theories are a collections of testable predictions about the relationships between certain variables. They are developed based on observations, and their corresponding hypotheses are tested and refined through correlational and experimental studies.

  9. Critical-Thinking Questions Concerning Leadership Findings • Who is in the sample? • What is the situation? • What leadership qualities, characteristics, or behaviors are being assessed? • How is leadership success being determined? • How do the writers link leadership assessment to success?
