What is the Top 100? • The Outstanding Student Recognition Program honors the Most Outstanding junior and senior students at Butler. • The Program is in its 49th year and was developed by the Alumni Association and the Office of Student Affairs. • It recognizes student achievement and helps identify future alumni leaders.

  3. What is the Top 100? The following characteristics are considered when determining the Top 100. • Outstanding Character • Scholarship • Engaged Citizenship • Leadership • Commitment to fostering diversity

  4. Timeline • September 2009 Nominations are accepted • October 1, 2009 Nominations are closed • October 7 & 8, 2009 Application 101 • November 1, 2009 Application Deadline • Nov. 3 – Dec. 1, 2009 Round I Voting – Selecting Top 100 • December 4, 2009 (approx.) Notification to all Top 100 participants • February 1, 2010 Recommendation Deadline • February 1, 2010 Guest List Deadline • February 5 – March 5, 2010 Round II Voting – Ranking Top 10 Men and Women • February 12, 2010 Invitations to all Top 100 guests • April 9, 2010 Outstanding Student Banquet

Voting Round I Voting • Approx. 10 members representing each college, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Alumni and Athletics • Committee reviews & scores all completed applications • Selects the Top 100 Round II Voting • Approx. 10 different members representing each college, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Alumni and Athletics • Rank the Top 100 to determine the Top 10 Male and Top 10 Female students, including Most Outstanding

Application Access the Application • Visit www.butler.edu/top100 click on link • Use your Butler username and password • Manually click on “log-on” button Possible problems • Avoid using Safari on a Mac • If you cannot log-on or “time-out” of the system, try a different browser or a computer in one of the computer labs.

  7. Application Cumulative GPA • Please use your cumulative GPA from May 2009. • GPA will be verified through Registration & Records.

  8. Application Academics Please list any academic honors you have received. • This would include scholarships, awards or distinctions. • Briefly describe the honor. Academics Examples • Parent Council Book Scholarship recipient, 2007 • BUSF Member of the Year, 2008 • Lilly Endowment Scholar

  9. Application Personal Reflection Please submit a 200-250 word essay on the following: In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge that your generation will have? What ideas do you have for dealing with this issue?

  10. Application Activities and Leadership Please list your top 5-7 activities (student organizations, varsity teams and any other activities) in which you have been involved since coming to Butler University. • Organization Name • Length of Involvement • Positions, Description and Contribution

Application Activities and Leadership Example • Butler University Student Foundation (BUSF) • Three years • Director of Operations • BUSF is a student group that works to connect students of the past (alumni), present and future (prospective students). I was responsible for overseeing all committee work within the organization and maintained regular communication with 4 committee chairs to execute all annual programming.

  12. Application Service Have you participated in community service at Butler, in Indianapolis and/or at home? If so, please use the following format for each organization with which you have been involved: • Organization Name • Length of Involvement • Positions, Description and Contribution

  13. Application Service Example • Timmy Foundation • Two years • Volunteer • The Timmy Foundation provides medical relief and health services to people in developing countries. I volunteered one day per month performing duties as assigned in their office. Some tasks included the assembling of medical aid packages or counting pills and vitamins for distribution.

Application Tools • Save – save as you type your application • This does not submit application, just saves application so you can go back later and make more changes • Finish – you will be asked to check a box stating that you have completed your application then click the “Finish” button to submit

  15. Tips Application Tips • You must submit the application. Saving the application does not submit it. • Once you have submitted the application, you cannot make any changes. • We highly recommended you create your application in Word so that you can keep a copy. This ensures that you have your work if you encounter computer problems while working in the online system!

  16. Tips Application Tips • Make sure you spell check your work. • “Application Question” in the banner area can be used for questions about application content or the Top 100 process. You may also email top100@butler.edu. • “Contact the Help Desk” in the banner area of the website can be used to report any technical issues. • When you use either email tool, please include your name and email address as part of the message so we can follow-up with you.

Top 100 Selection Selection • The Top 100 will be determined by the Round 1 judges. • All students will be notified around December 4 of the round 1 results Only the Top 100 students will continue to the second round of judging, which includes recommendations. This round determines the Top 10 Men, Top 10 Women and Most Outstanding student winners.

  18. Recommendations Recommendations • If you are named to the Top 100, you will be asked to solicit up to three recommendations. • We suggest using two faculty/staff members. The third recommendation can be a friend, advisor, mentor or coach, etc. (Faculty/staff members serving on the second voting committee cannot write recommendations.) • On the Top 100 site, you will need to submit an email address for those you’ve asked to submit a recommendation on your behalf.

  19. Recommendations Recommendations (continued) • The person making the recommendation will be contacted via email by the Top 100 system. They will be given a form to complete and submit electronically for your recommendation. • Any Butler faculty or staff member making the recommendation will be able to view your application. • We suggest the recommendations focus on student’s character, personality, work ethic, etc. Academic accomplishments are easily seen through honors, GPA, etc. on the application.

  20. Recommendations Recommendations (continued) • You will be able to see when recommendations are submitted on your behalf. It is up to you to make sure that you have all three of your recommendations turned in on time. • Recommendations are due February 1, 2010.

  21. Banquet Outstanding Student Banquet • All students selected to the Top 100 will be invited to the Outstanding Student Banquet on April 9, 2010. • You will be asked to submit a list of guests (names and addresses) who you would like to invite to the banquet. Be sure to do this so your parents/guests get invitations.There is no limit on the number of guests you can invite. This event does cost $35 per person. However, the Top 100 honorees are guests of the alumni association. • Please submit guest lists by February 1, 2010.

  22. Where are we today in the process? • As of 10/7/09 580 students were nominated • As of 10/7/09 15 completed applications
