Commitment • Students zoned to the Kingwood area will attend Bear Branch Elementary • Students zoned to the Atascocita, Humble, Summerwood and Fall Creek will attend Pine Forest Elementary • Transportation will NOT be provided • Parents will sign a 5 year commitment to the Spanish Immersion Program

  8. What do I need to do as a parent? Parents need to: • Read in English every night and turn in signed weekly reading log. • Complete weekly writing piece. This includes: helping with daily language homework (spelling and /or grammar). • Revise, edit and review teacher directions as stated on homework.

  9. Do I need to speak Spanish? • Parents do not need to speak Spanish at home. • Depending on the subject, homework could be in either English or Spanish. • Spanishhomeworkwill be a review or extended practice of content already taught in the classroom. What does homework look like for SIP students? • Homework looks different in every grade level.

  10. STAAR Testing • Students will be taking the STAAR tests in Englishbeginning in 3rd grade. • 3rd grade STAAR Reading & Math • 4th grade STAAR Reading, Math & Writing • 5th grade STAAR Reading, Math & Science • All Benchmark Assessments will be administered in English.

  14. Is my child a good “FIT” for SIP? • Kindergarten students who are reading at an independent level 6 with a comprehension of a 16 by the second week in May will be considered.

Opportunities for Middle School We currently offer a continuation of Spanish immersion education at Creekwood Middle School through an accelerated Spanish program. 6th grade – Enhanced Spanish I 7th grade – Enhanced Spanish II 8th grade – Spanish III Advanced Spanish Classes Currently Offered at Other Middle School Campuses (8th grade): Humble MS -Spanish for Spanish Speakers Atascocita MS - Spanish for Native Speakers Timberwood MS - Spanish for Spanish Speakers Ross Sterling MS - Spanish for Spanish Speakers Woodcreek MS - Spanish for Spanish Speakers

  16. Opportunities for High School Students who complete Spanish III in 8th grade will have the opportunity to take Spanish IV and Spanish V in high school. This presents an opportunity for dual college credit. It also allows students to pursue a third language in high school. Campuses currently offering Spanish IV and V: Summer Creek HS, Kingwood HS, Humble HS, Atascocita HS Campuses currently offering Spanish IV: Kingwood Park HS, Quest ECHS

  17. Application Process • Applications for the Spanish Immersion program will be accepted from March 6thto March 28th, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. • All applications must be returned to the front office at Bear Branch or Pine Forest Elementary. • Upon meeting entrance qualifications, students not in Tier 1 will be placed in the program, if seats are available, by the tiered lottery below. • If more qualifying applicants are received than seats available; students may be placed on a waiting list according to the tiered lottery below: • Parents will be notified of the student’s acceptance into the program during the last week of the 2013-2014 school year.
