Exponential Growth • The size of each generation of offspring will be larger than the one before it • The larger the population gets, the faster it grows
Logistic Growth • Is when a population’s growth slows and then stops, after a period of exponential growth • Growth stops when birthrate = death rate and immigration = emigration
Carrying Capacity • Is the maximum number of individuals of a particular species that a particular environment can support
Limits • A limiting factor controls the growth of a population • Examples – competition, predation, parasitism, disease, unusual weather, natural disaster • These determine carrying capacity
Human Population • Slow growth early • Civilization advancements increased growth • Bubonic plague caused a decrease • Industrial Revolution led to exponential growth
