  2. The overall problems of the public educational system • The American educational system has low educational standards which allow other nations to pass them by educationally. • Teachers do not teach for students’ futures, they teach to keep their jobs. • The public school learning environment is in poor condition.

  3. Low Educational Standards Yield Poor Results • According to a study in Time 69% of 8th graders are below proficient in reading, while 68% are below proficient in math (Ripley). Casey, Annie. Our Children Are Not Reading At Grade Level. 2010. Studentsfirst. Web. 16 Apr. 2013.

  4. US Against the World • Even though the United States is 5th in amount spent for education purposes, it ranks 21st in science performance (Ripley). Pisa. U.S. Students Rank 25th in Math Performance. 4 Dec 2007. Studentsfirst. Web. 16 Apr. 2013.

  5. The solution, more qualified teachers. • Before teachers can become certified a bar exam should be given. The bar exam would test on core subjects taught in school along with an oral portion which help determine whether a teacher has the ability to run a classroom (Wherry). Raising the Bar. 2012. Public News Service. Web. 16 Apr. 2013.

  6. The future of the nation is not being properly educated. • In a study done by MEED in 2012 it was said that 29.5% of potential employers believe that the ability to be a problem solver is a vital attribute they look for in graduates (Allison). • Public schools do not teach this to their students, they are too busy teaching to the test to worry about the students’ futures.

  7. Solution, find unique ways to teach the curriculum and vital job attributes. • If teachers find ways to have students work together in class to solve problem-solving tasks then they learn teamwork and how to effectively solve problems that can be faced daily in the workforce.

  8. Poor overall learning environments lead to poor student performances. • Degreesearch.org presents statistics which say that 1.2 million students drop out a year, this is 7,000 students a day, and 1 student dropping out every 26 seconds. KATU News. 9 Apr. 2013. KATU.com. Web. 16 Apr. 2013

  9. The solution, find administrators that care. • Paul Douglas White wrote an article on 6 of the major public school problems and possible solutions for them. White mentions the way to turn around a school system is to find principals that will drop everything and do whatever is possible for “their children” (White).

  10. What does this have to do with you? • The students in the educational system are the future of the nation. • If the nation does not fix this problem what could happen to our futures?
