Important Leaders Horace Mann • State Senate President. • This power allowed him to create the first state board of education • Established the idea of public schools, training systems for teachers, and the time period a student attended school [6 months] • Funded for teaches, books, and school construction • **Believed everyone should be taught economics Noah Webster • noticed that people spoke a slightly different language • created a spelling and grammar book • sold more than 100 million copies • known as the “Blue- Backed Speller” • Now known as “Webster’s Dictionary”

Connection to the Jacksonian Democracy • Horace Mann had the idea to have public schools, established first state board of education and increased length of school to 6 months rather than just a winter session allowing opportunity for the common man. This connects to Jacksonian democracy because now common men have more opportunity. Previously, the wealthy only were educated. However, now the common man has the ability to become educated leading the common man into understanding more, permitting them to make decisions in society and politics. • Horace Mann wanted the people to be educated about the economy allowing the common man to become more successful after knowing how to operate and understand personal and national finance. Having more people educated about the economy initiated input regarding the government’s use of commerce; ultimately reflecting democracy with more say in government.
