  2. Activity Re-read the poem and determine what it is. Do NOT call out or share your answer. Write your answer and show only your teacher.

  3. Who am I? I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half the things I do you might just as well turn over to me and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.

  4. I am easily managed – you must merely be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great individuals and, alas, of all failures, as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures.

  5. I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a human. You may run me for a profit or run me for ruin – it makes no difference to me.

  7. Life Life is a jungle for everyone out of kindergarten and it helps to have a compass, or tool, that helps move us in the right direction.

  8. Emotional Roller Coaster What are some of the situations that you have to deal with in real life? [Somebody, please take notes!]

  9. Life is going to happen. Would it help to have a set of tools for you to deal with these types of issues? Would it hurt?

  10. Re-look at the class list of situations and next to each one write one or two words that describe what you could do to deal with the problem. Example: “There’s too much to do and not enough time.” -- prioritize

  11. -- So -- What do all of the things that you have identified have in common? Most of them are probably habits.

  12. What is a habit? Habits are things we do repeatedly. Most of the time we are hardly aware that we have them. They’re on autopilot.

  13. Good Habits What are some good habits? [Make a list] Did you include: exercising regularly planning ahead showing respect for others

  14. Bad Habits Now, list some of the not so good habits. [You have to write these too!] Did you include: thinking negatively feeling inferior blaming others

  15. Not Good – Not Bad Some habits don’t go on either list. They are just things that we do that don’t have a positive or a negative impact. Example: taking showers every night eating yogurt with a fork reading magazines from back to front

  17. 7 Effective Habits • Begin with the End in Mind (mission/goals) • Be Proactive (be responsible for your life) • Sharpen the Saw (renew yourself) • Put First Things First (Prioritize) • Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (listen to people) • Think Win-Win (everyone can win attitude) • Synergize (work together to achieve more)

  18. ORDER ? Let’s classify the 7 Habits and give them some order. There are three (3) that are “private.” They require self-mastery. Self is always first. Then there are three (3) that are “public.” These require you to work with someone else – teamwork. After self, then you can work with others.

  19. Wait! There are seven (7). What about the last one. Where does it go? The last habit is one that feeds the other six habits. So, put them in order and let’s see how you do.

  27. Public Victory Habits These are habits that deal with relationships and teamwork.

  39. Top 10 All-Time Stupid Quotes You are going to hear a list of statements made many years ago by experts. At the time, they sounded intelligent. How do they sound to you today?

  40. WOW! Your turn. Write three statements that you feel are valid in your life. Volunteers to read a few?

  41. Let’s see Now you will hear some statements that real teens just like you have made. They are just as ridiculous as the list above. What will happen to your list in ten years?

  42. What do they have in common? First – perceptions about the way things are. Second – all inaccurate or incomplete, even though the people were convinced they were true

  43. Another word for perceptions is paradigms [pronoun: pair-a-dimes] It is the way you see something, your point of view, frame of reference, or belief.

  44. Like glasses When you have incomplete paradigms about yourself or life in general, it’s like wearing glasses with the wrong prescription. They affect everything in your life.

  45. We have paradigms about ourselves, other people, and life in general.

  46. SELF Are your paradigms helping or hindering you? Negative self-paradigms can put limitations on you. Positive self-paradigms can bring out the best in you.

  47. Others Seeing from different point of view can help us understand why other people act they way they do. How do you react to class mates that are moody or difficult? Why? And why do they act like that?

  48. Life You can usually tell what your paradigm is by asking yourself the following questions. “What is the driving force of my life?” “What do I spend my time thinking about?” “Who or what is my obsession?”

  49. Whatever is important to you will become your paradigm, or your > > > > > > life-center Some are: friends, stuff, boyfriend/girlfriend, school, parents, sports/hobbies, heroes, enemies, self, and work

  50. Friend-Centered It’s great to belong to a group! Friends can be fickle, fake, talk behind your back, find new friends, forget about you. They can cause you to compromise your standards to accommodate them.
