  1. 2016-2017 Substitute Teacher Orientation

  2. Administrative Expectations • Substitute candidates will be placed on the Active list provided they meet the following requirements: • Substitute application completed • Reference responses returned • Background check approved • Fingerprint session completed • All required employment documents submitted • Attend orientation • Please inform HR about any status changes in degree or certification

  3. Fulfillment Expectations • 60 days of inactivity will result in removal from the active substitute list • Individuals removed from the active list must reapply and meet the current requirements • Notify the campus if you are unable to fulfill an accepted assignment • One half day = up to 5 hours • One full day = 8 hours • Accommodate campus requests to work during “your” planning period

  4. Expectations During an Assignment • Arrive with enthusiasm and read through the Substitute Folder • Have pride in Northwest Independent School District • Respect the confidence of fellow teachers • Report any serious situations or problems to the principal • Do not release a child to anyone without permission from the main office • Do not take or hold money for students • Do not leave the building during the day without notifying the principal • Never take a book, newspaper, magazine, electronic book, etc… to read when you are expected to be on duty • Do not make personal phone calls • Put your phone on silent mode during instruction • If you cannot find lesson plans, ask the office or a team teacher • Follow the designated lesson plans

  5. Accidents and Illness Handling Illness and Accidents • Do not touch a student where he/she is bleeding, even if you use gloves. Provide the student with tissue or paper towels, instructing them to hold it on their wound • If appropriate, send the student to the nurse’s office for further care. If the situation is an emergency, dial 911 and notify the office immediately • Do not administer medicine of any kind to students (no aspirin, cough medicine, prescription or non-prescription drugs)

  6. On the Job Injuries • If you are injured while on the job as a substitute, you must report the injury to the principal immediately • This report must be completed no matter how small or insignificant your injury may be • The principal will give guidance and assistance on necessary procedures and paperwork

  7. Professional Ethics • Exercise caution when expressing personal opinions and reactions to any subject • Be prompt and professional • Complaints and compliments should be directed to the building principal • Do not discuss complaints about a teacher with parents, refer the parent to the building principal • Maintain confidentiality • Transgender students

  8. Moral Turpitude Moral turpitude includes but is not limited to: • Dishonesty; fraud; deceit; theft; misrepresentation; • Deliberate violence; • Base, vile, or depraved acts that are intended to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of the actor; • Felony possession, transfer, sale, distribution, or conspiracy to possess, transfer, sell, or distribute any controlled substance defined in Chapter 481 of the Health and Safety Code • Acts constituting public intoxication, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, or disorderly conduct, if anytwo or more acts are committed within any 12-month period; or • Acts constituting abuse under the Texas Family Code

  9. Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drugs • Northwest prohibits the use of any tobacco products on District premises • Employees shall not manufacture, distribute, dispense, possess, use, or be under the influence of any of the following substances during working hours while at school or at school-related activities during or outside of usual working hours: Any controlled substance or dangerous drug as defined by law, including but not limited to marijuana, any narcotic drug, hallucinogen, stimulant, depressant, amphetamine, or barbiturate • Alcohol or any alcoholic beverage • Any abusable glue, aerosol paint, or any other chemical substance for inhalation • Any other intoxicant, or mood-changing, mind-altering, or behavior-altering drugs

  10. Dress Code • Dress professional • Appearance should be neat and clean • Avoid uncomfortable shoes and clothing • Select clothing that will allow you to bend down and stoop over • Campus specific dress code

  11. What Not to Wear • Blue jeans, sweat pants and shorts should not be worn except on “field day” or other special activity • Blouses, shirts or tops that reveal the midriff or chest may not be worn • Hats and caps are not allowed inside the campus buildings unless it is a field day or special activity • Clothing of any sort that contains a message that promotes alcohol, drugs, tobacco or any other type of message that may cause disruption or disturbance in school; and • Clothing which contains obscene or suggestive language

  12. Discipline • Substitute teachers are expected to assume responsibility for the discipline in their groups and to assist in the correction of all other irregularities that may occur. • Teachers should, at all times, exhibit to their pupils respect • The Student Code of Conduct containing information regarding student discipline shall be distributed at the beginning of the school year to students, parents, teachers and administrators. • The Board prohibits the use of corporal punishment in the District. Students shall not be spanked, paddled, or otherwise physically disciplined for violations of the Student Code of Conduct. • Deal with problems “on the spot”. • Don’t discipline the student in front of the class. • Be sure to have all the facts and listen to both sides. • Give the child the benefit of the doubt!

This gives you access to several classroom management techniques for all grade levels.   14. Substitute Evaluation • Evaluations will be used to recognize positive and negative feedback • Evaluations will be given on unsatisfactory performance at any time • Any substitute who receives 3 exclusions from any NISD campuses for unsatisfactory employment will be removed from the active substitute list

  15. Removal from Active Roster An occurrence of the following behaviors may result in immediate removal (this listing is not all inclusive): • Using profanity in the presence of students • Endangering students by leaving them unattended for inappropriate amounts of time or by falling asleep in the classroom • Making sexually or racially inappropriate oral/written comments or displaying inappropriate graphic or physical conduct, or subjecting students to racial or sexual harassment • Using alcohol or unlawful drugs on school premises • Insubordination • Willful violation of school rules/regulations • Willful refusal to follow instructions and or lesson plans left by the classroom or 3 exclusions from NISD Campus Substitute Evaluation Forms • 60 days of in-activity • Any other inappropriate behavior

Emergency Operations Plan • What is an Emergency Operations Plan? • Detailed plan with evacuation instructions • Parent student reunification locations (Confidential) • First aid procedures • Mandatory drills • Three year campus audits • Audit team • Each NISD Campus has an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) • While on the campus you may be given confidential information regarding certain parts of the Emergency Operations Plan • For the students and staff safety this information can never be shared with anyone

  18. Drills At any time you may be asked to participate in: • Lock-Down • Exterior Lock-Down • Drop, Cover and Hold (bad weather drills) • Hazmat and Seal • Shelter-in-Place • Evacuation (Off-site) • Reverse Evacuation Quick reference guide for drills are posted at all exterior doors (yellow)

  19. Lock-Down Drill 1. Stop all instruction. 2. Clear students from the halls then close and LOCK your door immediately. Be quiet, move students to interior walls and sit on the floor out of sight. Stay away from all doors and windows. 3. Cover window on classroom door and close ALL blinds, if safe to do so. 4. Turn off or mute all phones and cell phones. They should not be used unless communicating critical information to the front office. 5. Shut OFF lights. 6. Ignore all school bells and wait for further instruction. 7. Do NOT open the door for ANYONE. 8. Post preprinted (yellow) signage on all exterior doors. * If the danger is IN the building, do not lock exterior doors or post signs.

  20. Drop, Cover, and Hold Drill 1. Go to an interior wall or predetermined area. 2. Check all areas to ensure every student has been located. 3. Drop to the ground and face the wall away from any windows. 4. Seat students in single rows. 5. Cover your eyes by leaning your face against your knees, use your arms to protect your head and to the best degree possible, cover vital organs. 6. Hold in place until instructed to move. *Sheltered areas should be 30 feet or more from exterior glass. Avoid gyms or large areas with high walls and long roof spans. *Portables and out building occupants should move into the main building.

  21. HAZMAT and Seal Drill 1. Clear students from the halls immediately. Bring students in from outside immediately. 2. Close and lock ALL doors and windows. 3. Do NOT cover any windows. (Responders need to see you) 4. Tape all occupied classroom windows and doors, sealing the gap around each. (Simulate during drills) 5. Do NOT allow anyone to leave or enter the classroom. 6. Stay away from all doors and windows. 7. Do not utilize electronic devices. 8. Take attendance. 9. Wait for further instruction. 10. Administration will shut down air handling system/HVAC. (Simulate during drills)

  22. Shelter In Place Drill 1. Clear students from the halls immediately. Bring students in from outside immediately. 2. Close and lock ALL doors and windows. 3. Do NOT cover any windows. (Responders need to see you) 4. Do NOT allow anyone to leave or enter the classroom. 5. Stay away from all doors and windows. 6. Take attendance. 7. Wait for further instruction.

  23. Evacuation Drill WHEN YOU HEAR THE FIRE ALARM OR OTHER EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT: 1. Make sure classroom door is closed and unlocked. 2. Take class roster and emergency “Go Kit” and move students safely and quickly to predetermined area. 3. Check for injuries. 4. Take attendance. 5. Hold up Green/Red card. 6. Wait for further instruction.

  24. Reverse Evacuation 1. Move students and staff inside as quickly as possible. 2. At this time you will be given further instructions to Lock-Down, Shelter-In-Place, Hazmat and Seal, or Drop, Cover and Hold. 3. Take attendance and report results. 4. Wait for further instruction. *If students cannot be moved safely into the building, they should be evacuated to a predetermined area.

  25. Emergency Notification • Automated calling system • Notifies parents of closings and campus emergencies such as a lock down • District website • Local news stations and radio stations

  26. Know Your Surroundings • You must sign in and out each day you substitute • All visitors and staff are required to wear an ID Badge or Sticker • If you are not provided with a copy of the school’s Emergency Operations Procedures manual, please request a copy from the office • Familiarize yourself with your surroundings so that you know how to evacuate the class in the event of a fire drill or other emergency • Know where the nearest exits are located – emergency evacuation routes posted in every room • Take the classroom Go Kit with you as you evacuate the building

  27. General Procedures • Do not prop exterior doors open • Wear your badge or substitute sticker at all times • Do not let anyone in from exterior doors even if you know them • Escort visitors to the front office to sign in • Do not release a student to anyone without office approval • Lock your classroom when you leave • Take a radio with you when you are outside with students for any reason or be sure a team member has one

  28. Points to Consider • Kids hear what you say and read your body language • Rumor control – did you see this happen? • What happened, what did not happen? • What do you share? • How do you respond to parents during an emergency? • What do you text during an emergency?

Substitute Renewal Process All substitutes must renew their active status annually • Regardless of your hire date • Information posted on AESOP and the Substitute Information page found on the website • Must complete Letter of Reasonable Assurance (LRA) in May • All substitute accounts will be deactivated at the end of the school year and will be reactivated prior to the new school year and based on timely submission of LRA
