Role Play • Ask for volunteer to be the substitute for the day. • Select “students” and identify the grade level. • Suggest that you use a maximum of five “students”. • Go through the day in the life information and assume they have done all the steps you have identified. • Have students do the following; • Have student (1) tell the teacher they have to go to the library to take a test. • Student (2) gets ill and needs to go to the nurse. • Make sure you encourage the sub to set out expectations and objectives for the class at the beginning. • Have other students ”ad lib”

Proven Strategies • Show value to staff and subs by adequately educating and training both in how to utilize and maximize resources. • Use same sub staff as much as possible so students become familiar with them. • Include subs in professional development activities, especially staff orientation day. • Consider using different terminology other than “substitute teacher”..ie, adjunct faculty. • Assess success and needs from both staff and subs. • Personally visit each sub on several occasions, but especially at the beginning of their first assignment.
