  1. Houston County High School 9th Grade Registration 2019-2020

  2. Registration Overview • Students will take 7 classes per semester. • Registration is for the full academic year 2019 - 2020. Students take part A of each course first semester and part B second semester. • As a freshman, 5 classes are required (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, & Health/Personal Fitness). • The remaining 2 classes are electives. • Students will select four elective classes in order of their preference. We do our very best to schedule the top two, however if those classes are full, the third and fourth choice may be scheduled.

  3. Gifted Students • Must be in at least 1 Honors class to remain in the Gifted Program. • There is no requirement as to which one you take. • You may take all honors classes by checking the appropriate box next to each course.

  4. Course Selection: English • You are required to take 9th Grade Literature as an academic class. • Check the honors box next to the course if you are in the gifted or GTE program, or check the regular education box if you are in regular education classes, or check the IEP box if you are served through an IEP. • Middle Schools will identify students who meet the qualifications for the Gifted classes.

  5. Course Selection: Math • You are required to take Algebra or Honors Geometry as an academic class. • If you are currently in Algebra, you must check the honors box next to Honors Geometry. • If you are in 8th Grade Math, you will take Algebra 1. Check the regular education box if you are in regular education classes, or check the IEP box if you are served through an IEP. • Middle Schools will identify students who meet the qualifications for the honors class.

  6. Course Selection: Social Studies • You are required to take American Government/Civics and US & World Affairs as your academic Social Studies class. • Check the honors box next to the course if you are in the gifted or GTE program, or check the regular education box if you are in regular education classes, or check the IEP box if you are served through an IEP. • Middle Schools will identify students who meet the qualifications for the honors classes.

  7. Course Selection: Science • You are required to take Biology as your academic Science class. • Check the honors box next to the course if you are in the gifted or GTE program, or check the regular education box if you are in regular education classes, or check the IEP box if you are served through an IEP. • Middle Schools will identify students who meet the qualifications for the honors classes.

  8. Course Selection: Health and Physical Education Requirement • You are required to complete 1 unit of Health and Personal Fitness for graduation. • You will take these classes as a 9th grader.

  9. Course Selection: Electives • In the section for Elective Choices, please follow the directions carefully. • You should have a total of 4 selections in this section. You will write a 1 on the blank next to your first choice elective, a 2 for your second choice elective, a 3 for your third choice elective, and a 4 for your fourth choice elective. • You should only have 4 electives marked. • These electives are for first and second semester. We do not change electives during the school year. • Also, please remember: Elective choices are not guaranteed as schedules are based on class availability and potential scheduling conflicts.

  10. What to Expect as a Freshman • All students must take 7 courses per semester. Passing five of the seven courses are required for promotion to the 10th Grade. • Attendance is reported in each class. • Your GPA begins immediately. • As a Freshman, you will have to take a Milestone in 9th Grade Literature, Algebra or Honors Geometry, and Biology. This test will count 20% of the student’s grade second semester. • If you are already aware of the college program of study and/or career path you want to pursue, try to enhance this interest by taking electives that support your choice. • Get involved!

  11. Registration Summary • You will be given a copy of the registration form which must be turned in to your middle school counselor with a parent or guardian’s signature. • The YELLOW Copy is for the parents to KEEP.
