  2. Location • Located in Central America • Neighbors Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador

  3. Population 38.1% of the population is 14 or under, 58% is 15-64, and 3.9% is 65 or over The average age is 20 The official language is Spanish with various other Amerindian languages spoken throughout the country The population is 59.4% Mestizo and European and 41.6% indigenous.

  4. Economics The unemployment rate is 3.2% The GDP has grown 4.6%, 5.7%, 4%, 0.6%, and 2.6% each of the last five years The GINI coefficient was 55.1 (11th) in 2005 The top 10% of people account for 42.4% of income and the bottom 10% account for 1.3% 15% of people live in extreme poverty One of the highest GDPs in Latin America

  5. Important Industries Guatemala’s three most important exports are coffee, sugar, and bananas.

  6. Government Guatemala is a constitutional democratic republic Became independent from Spain on September 15, 1821

Most Important Events On September 15, 1821, Guatemala officially announced its independence from Spain, joining the Mexican Empire In October 1944, General Juan Vaides was forced out of office in a coup d’état, leading to the countries first democratic elections Guatemalan government was overthrown in 1982, leading to a 14 year civil war between the new government and guerrilla groups

  8. Otto Perez Molina The runner-up in the 2007 elections, Otto Perez Molina is currently the frontrunner for the presidency Is in the middle of a runoff election for the presidency that will be decided on November 6th

Significant Issues Disease and drug violence has lead to a low life expectancy and one of the lowest average ages in the world Guatemala had the fourth highest murders per capita in the world in 2010 Guatemala has one of the highest income disparities in the world and 75%of people live below the poverty line

  10. Culture The culture of Guatemala is split between rural and urban The culture of the indigenous peoples is heavily influenced by Mayan culture Mestizos (urban) culture is heavily influenced by Spanish culture

  11. Relations with the US Guatemalan-U.S relations have mostly been strong The U.S was one of 6 countries that took part in the UN peace accords that ended the civil war in 1996 The United States has given over $500 million to support peace in Guatemala
