  2. Birth Control Pill “The Pill” first reliable (thought not completely) method of birth control. Predicted to end…unwanted pregnancy, child abuse, poverty, and abortion. Predicted to make…woman equals, better marriage.

  4. HumanaeVitae - 1968 Pope Paul VI’s Predicts… a. General lowering of morality (Example: Cohabitation, Divorce, promiscuity, etc.) b. General disregard for psychological and physical well being of women by men (Example: pornography, increase in poverty, increase in sexual abuse, woman as objects. No need for men to commit to, care for, and protect women.). c. Governments’ use of coercive means of family planning (Example: China, Cairo conference where third world begged for prenatal care and were given contraception and abortion). d. Treating bodies as machines – lose respect for body as integral with soul . We want to turn fertility off and on. (Example: “designer genes” – buy the genes of your baby, surrogate mothers, in-vitro fertilization, 65 year olds having babies).

Fewer children later in marriage Empirical evidence shows that the sooner a couple begins having children, the longer their marriage lasts! (Weird but true!) 3. Increased adultery 4. Increased sexual activity before marriage 5. More Abortions – Contraceptives can fail so abortions are “necessary” in these cases

  7. Contraception Changes our view of sex Contraceptives make people believe that sex is safe for people who are not committed and/or do not want to be pregnant! Sex becomes a leisure time activity instead of a family creating event. Sex partner can more easily be seen as an object.

  9. The Nature and Meaning of Sexuality If you want things to prosper, you have to use things in nature for what they were made for! Sexual intercourse is for babies and bonding. What is its purpose? To bring husband and wife closer together (unitive) and to bring babies into the world (procreative). Pleasure is not the purpose of sex. It’s a consequence of sex, not the purpose.

Main objections of the Catholic Church to the use of contraceptives Contraceptives do not let God perform His creative act in the “arena” he designed for it Highest good in relationship: sex or respecting fertility Children are infinitely precious, not “options,” “burdens,” or “environmental hazards.” Hormonal contraceptives suppress the natural function of a woman’s body – hostile to a woman’s fertility and health Barrier methods keep the act of sex from being a total self giving and receiving – exclude fertility. Full meaning of sex as a sign and symbol of a relationship that is free, total, faithful, and fruitful is lessened.

  11. How the Pill Works 1. Stops ovulation—most of the time. 2. Changes the viscosity of the mucus (sperm can’t swim as well) 3. Won’t allow a fertilized egg to implant. (changes the uterine lining) – early abortion This third method is the method of the morning after pill, the IUD and progesterone only pill safe for nursing mothers.

  14. Abstaining before marriage makes NFP easier to practice I can wait. It is a sign of love and respect. We have waited before. I respect my wife and don’t want to make her pregnant until we are ready. We discuss why we are open or not open to life every month.

  15. “Formula for Success in Marriage.” a. No sex before marriage. If you are sexually active, stop for a year or two years before getting married. b. Get married in a church, and go to church regularly. c. Use NFP, not contraceptives. d. Stewardship. (Sharing time, talent, and treasure with Charities and/or church) “If you get God, sex, and money in the right place, everything else is easier.”
