THE NATIONAL MAIN STREET CENTER • National Trust for Historic Preservation developed pilot program in 1977 • Hot Springs, SD; Madison, IN; Galesburg, IL • National Main Street Center established in 1980, Washington, D.C. • Network of > 40 statewide, citywide, and countywide coordinating programs with more than 1,200 active local programs

  6. THE WISCONSIN MAIN STREET PROGRAM • Housed in the Department of Commerce • Law enacted in November 1987 (The Main Street Act) • The 27th state to join the program • First five Main Street communities announced in 1988 • 35 communities are currently involved • Council on Main Street

  7. MISSION STATEMENT: The Wisconsin Main Street Program administers an economic development program targeting Wisconsin’s historic commercial districts. Bureau staff provides technical support and training to Wisconsin communities that have expressed a grass roots commitment to revitalizing their traditional business districts using a comprehensive strategy based on historic preservation.
