  1. Instrumentation needs M. Meddahi • General layout • Requested instruments and precision • LTI • CNGS • Beam instrumentation layout Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  2. TT60 Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  3. Dynamic range TI 2 and TI 8 beam : From one pilot to 4 trains of 72 bunches 5 109 (pilot) to 4.9 1013 p/extraction (ultimate) 2 extractions of 10.5 ms in a 6s cycle 2.4 1012 p (SU) to 3.5 1013 p/extraction (ultimate) CNGS : T1 : Slow extracted beam Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  4. Beam Position monitors Precision required :+/- 0.1 mm BPM radius 30 mm Within 20 mm : precision : 0.3% --> +/- 0.1 mm Outside : precision : 1% --> 0.3 mm resolution : 1 per mil --> 0.03 mm Select : all bunches individually (same electronics as LHC) 2 processes running in parallel (one accumulating the average data, one for a particular bunch or all bunches individually). + CNGS : beam angle accuracy : 0.1 mrad Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  5. Intensity measurements Beam current transformers : Very good absolute precision difficult Relative 1 % Also Intensity measurements possible with BPM if both X and Y axes equipped : +/- 1% precision in radius of 15 mm +/- 2 % in radius of 20 mm Some BPMs will be equipped in both planes Interesting tool to check the intensity along the line, where losses might occur Equip the line with both BCT and few X/Y BPMs Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  6. Beam loss monitors Ionization Chamber : Sensitivity/resolution ~3000 e- /primary charges Very broad dynamic range (0.1% of pilot/ultimate) 30 BLMs in each TI 18 in TT41 Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  7. Profile measurements : Optics checks Emittance measurements Precision: Pilot (Alumina screen) s ~ 5% Others : Gaussian beam s ~ 4% Non-Gaussian: rms with better precision Measure the emittance taking these precisions into account (+ error on Twiss) Selection: Measure pilot, integrate a whole batch. If more required : one selected bunch, a selected train, ------> need to equip screen with PM or electronic shutter Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  8. SPS extraction Septa Kickers 418 417 419 Bumper 1 Bumper 2 Bumper 3 Bumper 4 x (m) - measurement of the bumped beam position - simultaneous horizontal & vertical orbit acquisition - Extracted beam profile & position at the entrance and exit of septum. s(m) Instrumentation needs LTI and CNGS Controls Review

  9. Extraction LSS4 and LSS6 - BPM : Special BPM in front of septum magnet Aperture radius : 100 …110 mm required precision & linearity : 100 … 200 mm over 50 % of aperture, i.e. 0.1 … 0.2 % ------> factor 20 …. - OTR : Use of OTR being investigated - BLM: Important for setting up (low intensity), for post mortem for the extracted beam, for interlocking to beam dump for circulating beam (bad bumper setting or septum position).
