  1. Intro to Clerkships Class of 2022 Feb. 17, 2020- Feb. 27, 2021

The Clerkship Year • Core clinical experiences across the disciplines • Students will rotate with their college • Organized in four 12 week blocks • On average each student will spend 14 weeks at away sites • Most clerkships longer than 2 weeks are graded Pass/Fail Clerkships are: • Surgical Subspecialties • Peri-Operative Medicine • Family Medicine • AIM

The Details • Students will rotate by College • AIM and FM are away – Your College Dean and Office for Student Affairs should already be aware of students with special considerations (please notify your college dean ASAP if you require special consideration) • Students rank preferences for surgical specialties • Schedules for each student will be generated by OASIS lottery • Trading will be allowed within college only for a short period of time. • Example: Trade Richmond Ob/Gyn for UVA Ob/Gyn

  4. Four 12-week Periods will include: * Available Surgical Subspecialties: Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology

  5. Away Rotations • All clerkships have away sites except: Neurology, Surgical Subspecialties, Emergency Medicine and Peri-Operative Medicine • Away rotations allow you to experience a variety of hospital settings: AIM and FM sites are all “away”

  6. Travel and Lodging at Away sites

Compassionate consideration • You will receive an email from your College Dean regarding Clerkships and “Compassionate Consideration”. • You need to let your College Dean know NOW (before scheduling begins) if you have any reason for not leaving Charlottesville for more than 3-4 weeks, or for a particular time interval during the year.

  8. Do I qualify for compassionate consideration?

  9. Car Requirement • All students need reliable access to a car during the clerkship year. • Even clerkships in the Charlottesville area may require driving • (Fontaine, Northridge, etc.)

  10. Before you begin clerkships: • Sit for USMLE Step 1 Exam (no later than: Friday, Feb. 7, 2020) • Participate in the required Transition Course (Feb. 17-28, 2020) • Basic training for confidentiality and privacy • Mask fitting for respiratory cases • Required annual PPD (must be placed/read BEFORE you begin your clinical rotations) • Additional Requirements: • A hand held smart phone • Hospital ID • Flu vaccination – make sure you have sticker on your ID badge

  11. USMLE Step One(United States Medical Licensing Exam) • Must take Step 1 no later than February 7, 2020 to be eligible to begin clerkships. • Applications are now available for you to register. • Application Due: October 30th , 2019

  12. Schedule of Events • Late September: OASIS lottery program is run with below criteria: • Assign Clerkship Grids (Schedules) – based on student’s college • Evenly distribute away weeks • Filling clerkship slots as evenly as possible • September 30: Students emailed to rank surgical subspecialties (via Qualtrics survey) • October 7: Deadline to request rank surgical • October 21: Initial schedules released to students (students will see the results of Surgical Subspecialties Lottery and Clerkship Schedules • October 21-November 4th: Trading locations/surgical subspecialties within college • November 15 (approx.): Final Schedules Available

  13. Comprehensive Basic Science Exam • All of SMD 22 students are required to take the Comprehensive Basic Science Exam • Exam will be administered Wednesday, December 11th 8-3pm • Location TBA • Information obtained used to guide your study
