  3. Population Growth • The world’s population has increased in the past two centuries. • 1800 1 billion people • Today more than 6 billion people • What is the reason for this growth in the population?

  4. What are the reasons for population growth? • The death rate has gone down and the birthrate has increased. • The death rate is the number of deaths per year for every 1,000 people. • The birthrate is the number of children born each year for every 1,000 people.

  5. Reasons why the population is growing • Better health care • Better living conditions • More plentiful food supplies because of advances in technologies.

Challenges of Population Growth • When the population density of a place increases warfare and crop failures can lead to famine. • When population density increases countries may also face shortages of water and housing. • When population density increases people may face shortages of clean water • Increased population density requires more medical facilities, schools and other government agencies

What is population density? • Population density is the average number of people living in a square mile or square kilometer. • Total population / land area in square miles (or square kilometers) • For example: Canada’s population of 33 million, divided by the land area of 3,559,294 square miles • 33,000,000/3,559,294 = a density of 9.27 people per square mile.

The Earth’s population is not evenly distributed • Why do people live on only a small part of the Earth? • Land only covers about 30 percent of the Earth’s surface. • Only half of this land is usable by humans. • There are landforms that cannot support large numbers of people like deserts, high mountains, and ice-covered lands.

  10. Why is the population density not evenly spread out? People prefer to live in places that have: • Fertile soil to grow crops • Mild climates • Natural resources and water resources

  12. Where do most people live and why? • Most people live in cities rather than in rural areas. Why? Jobs and resources are found in cities
