  1. CLUTCHES

  2. A clutch connects two shafts so they can locked together, rotating at the same speed • Decoupled & rotate at different speeds • Input shaft is driven by a motor or pulley

  3. Need for a Clutch • Engine rotates all the time, even when vehicle is not • The engine and wheels must be disconnected from each other • A clutch allows for smooth engagement & disengagement

  4. Manual Trans • A large clutch asm attached to engine & trans • Driver can engage/disengage the trans from engine by use of a clutch pedal • With foot off pedal, spring push a pressure plate against the clutch disk, which in turn presses against the engines flywheel • Engine & trans are now locked together • Pressing down on clutch pedal moves pressure plate away for disk, decoupling the engine from trans

  5. Typical Clutch Asm

  6. Clutches in Auto Trans • A clutch pack consists of alternating disks that fit inside a clutch drum. • Half of the disks are steel & have splines that fit into groves on the inside of the drum.  • The other half have friction material bonded to their surface & have splines on the inside edge that fit groves on the outer surface of the adjoining hub.  • A piston inside the drum is activated by oil pressure at the appropriate time, squeezing the clutch pack together, the two components are locked & turn as one.
