  1. Energy Efficiency Programs brought to you by: Act 129: Beyond the Bulb Association of Energy Engineers January 18, 2018 Hollywood Casino, Grantville PA pplelectric.com/businessrebates

  2. Act 129 UpdateBeyond the Bulb Presented by Joe Walter CLEAResult Account Manager Harry Devine PPL Key Account Manager

  3. Who Are We? • CLEAResult operates utility energy efficiency programs around the country • We implement PPL’s Act 129 Commercial and Industrial programs • Our goal is to move the marketplace to a new level of energy efficiency – We change the way people use energy

  4. Act 129 Energy Efficiency Legislation PA State Law • Enacted 2008 • Requires all public electric utilities to reduce impact on the electrical grid • Rate payer funded • Three phases, two completed • Phase III ends May 31, 2021

  5. Business Energy Efficiency Program Technical Assistance Program Navigation Efficiency Rebates

  6. PPL’s Energy Efficiency Programs • Residential, commercial, and industrial rebates for efficiency improvements • Offers: • Point-of-Sale Distributor Discounts • Direct Discounts through contractor network • Efficient Equipment rebates(Lighting, HVAC, kitchen equipment, EC motors, etc.) • Custom rebates: Everything outside the bulb!

  7. PPL’s Phase 3 Program Standard Offering Beyond the Bulb Custom Projects Efficient Equipment • 1-1 replacement or new construction • Quick and easy calculated savings for: • Lighting and standard controls • Food service equipment • HVAC equipment and VFD controls • Refrigeration • Office equipment • Some compressed air • Agricultural equipment

  8. Efficient Equipment Rebates • Performance-based rebates (one time) at: $0.05/annual kWh • Up to 50% of project cost or $500,000 • Standard list of measures • Savings calculated • Pre-approval required

  9. Custom Rebates • Performance-based rebates (one-time) at: $0.06/annual kWh • Up to 50% of project cost or $500,000 • Savings measured and verified • Projects must pass cost effectiveness test (TRC) • Pre-approval required

  10. Lighting Standard Lighting Controls !

  11. Lighting —Efficient Equipment • New construction and retrofit • Interior and exterior • Fluorescents and LEDs • Controls (standard) • Occupancy sensors • Daylighting • Personal tuning (dimming, dual switching)

  12. Lighting —Beyond the Bulb Advanced Lighting Controls Lighting Standard Lighting Controls !

  13. AdvancedLighting Controls Networked control of lighting systems provides multiple levels of control at fixture or zone of fixtures Layered savings produces up to 85% savings Qualified projects paid at 6 cents per kWh

  14. Advanced Lighting Controls —Beyond the Bulb Case Study, 3-shift manufacturing • Changed from 944 High Bay fluorescents to 468 LED with Advanced Lighting Controls • Energy savings • Lighting redesign 1,141,359 kWh • Controls 195,818 kWh • Intelligent tuning/control 341,327 kWh • Total Savings 1,678,504 kWh • PPL Custom Rebate $100,710 Standard Lighting 1-to-1 retrofit would have saved 945,541 kWh ($47,277 PPL rebate)

  15. New construction Advanced Lighting Controls Lighting Standard Lighting Controls !

  16. New Construction —Efficient Equipment • Rebates for efficient equipment – lighting and non-lighting • Beyond-code (IECC 2009) construction • Lighting and controls • HVAC • VFDs (non-code required)

  17. New Construction —Beyond the Bulb Whole-building rebates • Requires hourly energy simulation model such as required by LEED • Model calibrated with performance data _________________________________________ Project Example: New 77,000 SF surgery center • LED lighting and high efficiency mechanical systems • 228,000 kWh/yr. verified savings • Rebate: $13,680 • Incremental costs: 10% Mechanical/Electrical Costs

  18. New Construction Advanced Lighting Controls Lighting Standard Lighting Controls ! HVAC/Chillers

  19. HVAC and Chillers —Efficient Equipment • New construction and retrofit • HVAC equipment above IECC 2009 code minimum - chillers, PTACs, RTUs, VRF, heat pumps • Heat pump water heater • VFDs for air handler units, chilled and hot water pumping, and cooling tower fans Process cooling is always custom

  20. HVAC and Chillers —Beyond the Bulb • Advanced controls • Chiller optimization • Retro-commissioning • Energy recovery • Process cooling, etc.…

  21. New Construction Advanced Lighting Controls Lighting Standard Lighting Controls ! HVAC/Chillers Motors & VFDs

  22. Motors and VFDs —Efficient Equipment • Motor upgrades • Evaporator fan motors • Furnace fan motors • VFDs • Kitchen exhaust fans • Compressors • HVAC applications

  23. Motors and VFDs —Beyond the Bulb • VFDs - Wastewater treatment plant blower motors - Ventilation systems • Laboratory • Agricultural • Demand controlled ventilation - Pumping systems (non-HVAC applications)

  24. Motors and VFDs — Beyond the Bulb

  25. New Construction Advanced Lighting Controls Lighting Standard Lighting Controls ! Motors & VFDs HVAC/Chillers Compressed Air

  26. Compressed Air —Efficient Equipment • New VFD compressors ≤75 hp • Cycling refrigerated dryers • Storage for load/no-load machine • Engineered nozzles • Zero loss condensate drains

  27. Compressed Air —Custom • Demand side improvements • Leak repairs • End use efficiency improvement • Point of use storage • Air entraining nozzles • Supply Side improvements • Compressors • Dryers • Storage • Note; Vacuum systems fall into this category
