Ms. Tran’s 1st Grade News January 23, 2014 Wish List Item • A tape player with headphone connection capabilities • We have many books on tape, but unfortunately, do not have tape players to use for our listening post. If you have one in hand that you can donate, please let me know. Thanks! Class News A Friendly Reminder Next Wednesday will be our 100th Day of School. This is a big day in First Grade. We are asking that each student brings in 100 items in a small bag to share and count with the class. Please make sure it is 100 of the SAME thing such as 100 pennies, Cheerios, paper clips, stickers, etc. Thank you! Writing In March, all first graders will be taking a writing assessment on an opinion piece. They will need to respond with all statements related to a prompt, introduce a topic, state a clear opinion, supply reasons to support their opinion, and include a sense of closure. Thus, the students will be practicing opinion writing in class in addition to narratives. Next week the students will continue to develop addition and subtraction strategies to 20.  Students will solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20. They will apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.  For example to add 2+6+4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten so that 10+2=12. Math News
