  2. Portuguese Educacional System Education in Portugal is regulated by the State through two ministries: • the Ministry of Education andthe Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. There are: • public schools • private schools • Basic education • Intermediate education • Secondary education • Higher education (university education)

  3. Pre-school education For children between the age of 3 and 5. Attendance is only optional for children from 3 to 4 years old. Provided in state-run schools (free of charge) and private nursery schools.Schools are known as “Jardins-de-Infância” (Kindergartens).

  4. Pre - school education • Aims: • Stimulate the capacities of children and encourage their development, • Contribute to their emotional stability, • Encourage them to observe the natural world and human society, • Help them develop a moral sense, • Promote integration in different social groups, • Develop expressive and communication skills, • Encourage hygienic and healthy habits, • Detect early signs of dysfunctions, handicaps or special gifts, promoting good orientation and progress.

  5. Basic education Is universal, compulsory and free of charge and directed to children between 6 and 15 years of age. It lasts 9 years and is spread over 3 cycles:

Basic education • 1st cycle, lasting for 4 years - (grade 1, 2, 3 and 4) • (Primary / Elementary schools) • 2nd cycle, lasting for 2 years - (grade 5 and 6) • 3rd cycle, lasting for 3 years - (grade 7, 8 and 9) • (Junior High Schools) • A Diploma / Certificate is awarded at the end of the third stage

  7. Our school is an integrated junior high school • Our main building has the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle. • That is students from grade 1 to grade 9. • Our school is encharged and responsible for a large number of other small schools, which consists of:

  11. 1º Ciclo - 1st Cycle (Primary / Elementary schools) . Due to overloaded schools classes were from 8 am to1 pm and others from 1 pm to 6 pm. Educational centres are being constructed to reduce the number of overloaded elementary schools. Now, classes start at 9.00 am and finish at 5.30 pm. .

  12. 1º Ciclo - 1st Cycle (Primary / Elementary schools) . • Personal and Social Education: • Project Area • Accompanied Study • Citizenship Education • Compulsory subjects: • Portuguese Language • (Physical and Social) • Environment Study • Mathematics • Physical and Artistic Education • . Subjects like English, Musical Education, among others are offered according to school resources and are part of Enrichment Activities.

Junior High Schools(grade 5 to 9) • 2º Ciclo - 2nd Cycle(grade 5 and 6) • Portuguese Language • Mathematics • History and Geography of Portugal • Foreign Language I / English or French (levels 1 and 2) • Natural Sciences • Visual and Technological Education (Arts and Crafts) • Physical Education • Musical Education • Personal and Social Development or Catholic (or other confessions) • Moral and Religious Education (facultative) • Project Area • Accompanished Study • Civic Education .

  14. Junior High Schools(grade 5 to 9) . • Students have an average of 3 or 4 classes per day of 90 minutes each and some of 45 minutes. • Two breaks in the morning and two in the afternoon. • School starts at 8.25 and finishes at 6.30 pm.

  17. 3º Ciclo – 3rd Cycle(9th grade) . Same subjects, plus:: . • Information and Communication Technologies. • Option between Visual Education, Music/Theatre or Dance and Technological Education. • .

Secondary education • For pupils who have completed basic education. • Lasts for 3 years. • Secondary regular education is arranged into: Technological courses,designed mainly for pupils who want an intermediate level vocational qualification that will give access to the labour market. General courses,designed mainly for pupils who want secondary level instruction, with a view to pursuing higher education studies. Leads to a diploma of secondary education and, in the case of technological courses, to a level 3 vocational qualification.

Specialised artistic education Courses in specialised artistic education are administered in secondary education with the objective of providing artistic training for the pursuit of studies and vocational preparation in the visual arts, dance and music, and encouraging individual and group artistic practices.

  20. Recurrent secondary education Recurrent (second-chance) education is a special type of schooling which is available for those who did not complete secondary education at the usual age of attendance (up to age 18). . Recurrent secondary education has the same objectives and leads to the same diploma as regular secondary education, although it adopts plans and methods appropriate for its target users. . General courses and technical courses are provided in recurrent secondary education in several fields. Technical courses, apart from the diploma of secondary education, also lead to a level 3 vocational qualification.

  21. Vocational training Vocational courses are provided in vocational training, a special type of schooling, for those who have completed basic education. Vocational courses prepare the pupil for a professional activity and lead to a level 3 vocational qualification certificate and a diploma equivalent to the diploma of secondary education. These courses last for 3 years and are administered in vocational schools controlled by the Ministry of Education.

  22. Post-secondary, non-higher education Post-secondary, non-higher courses known as technological specialisation courses are taught in vocational training, mainly to those who have the diploma of secondary education and a level 3 vocational qualification and who want to acquire more scientific and technological knowledge in the field of their basic vocational training. These courses also develop personal and professional skills appropriate for working in the vocational qualification chosen by the student. These courses last a total of 1200 to 1560 hours, including training in a work context of 360 to 720 hours, and on completion a diploma in a technological specialisation is attributed certifying level 4 vocational qualification.

  23. Higher education Access Access to higher education is subject to number restrictions (numerus clausus) and admission is by competition. Students may apply who hold a diploma of secondary education or the equivalent, and who meet all the demands laid down by law, particularly exams in specific subjects in which minimum marks must be obtained.

  24. University education University education ensures a solid scientific and cultural preparation and provides technical training suitable for vocational and cultural work, encouraging the skills for concept-building, innovation and critical analysis.

  25. University education leads to the following degrees: a) Licenciado; bachelor’s degree b ) Mestre; master’s degree c ) Doutor. PhD or Doctorates degree This teaching is administered in universities, organised, as laid down in their statutes, in units that may adopt different names: e.g. faculty, institute, school, department. University teaching can also be administered in university colleges that are not integrated in universities, which are usually specialised.

  26. The national higher education system is fully integrated into the European Higher Education Area since 2006. • Bologna process - Creates more comparable, compatible and coherent systems of higher education in Europe. Under the Lisbon Recognition Convention of the Council of Europe, degrees and study periods are recognised mutually.

  27. The Bologna Process was a European reform process aimed at establishing a European Higher Education Area by 2010. • The reform aim was to create by 2010 a higher education system in Europe, organised in such a way that: • it is easy to move from one country to the other (within the European Higher Education Area) – for the purpose of further study or employment; • the attractiveness of European higher education is increased so many people from non-European countries also come to study and/or work in Europe; • the European Higher Education Area provides Europe with a broad, high quality and advanced knowledge base, and ensures the further development of Europe as a stable, peaceful and tolerant community.
