  1. Push factor- an existing circumstance in a given area that encourages people to leave or abandon that area Pull Factor- an existing circumstance in a given area that attracts people to that area Push Factor vs. Pull Factor

Examples; are the following push or pull? • Global warming causes an area that once grew crops to become a desert • There are many good paying jobs in the state of Texas • A country goes through a war • A city or town is unclean, unsanitary, or disease ridden • The weather in a given area is warm and mild

  3. Unions Grow in Europe • Unions grow large in Europe during the industrial revolution • They become so large in many countries that they form their own political parties • Ex. Labor Party in Great Britain • Workers Party in Germany • Unions have often been closely associated with communists and socialists

  4. Karl Marx • 1818-1883 • Born in Prussia but lived in London • Wrote and published a book called the Communist Manifesto • The poor will rise up and take over the country from the rich and make a new government

  5. Bourgeoisie- Rich people, factory owners • Proletariat- The workers who work at the factories and suffer at the hands of the bourgeoisie

  6. He creates the economic and political system known as Communism • com·mu·nism an economic system in which the People own all businesses and factories. All people receive equal wages

Communism • A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people. • The Marxist-Leninist version of Communist doctrine that advocates the overthrow of capitalism by the revolution of the proletariat.

Utopian Country • What is a Utopian country? • An ideally perfect place, especially in its social, political, and moral aspects. • Develop your own utopian government: Tell me how it works (how are laws made, how can people get involved in government) How people get jobs or make money Who has the power Name your system of government

  9. Communism and Unions • Marx theorized that the proletariat would organize, rise up, and take over • Communist parties form around the world • What do Unions do that might look like communist behavior? • Organizing • Strikes • Picketing • Protesting • In the name of equality
