  2. Lesson 1 Building Health Skills • Health skills are specific tools and strategies to maintain, protect, and improve all aspects of your health. They are life skills! • Interpersonal communication is the exchange of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs between two or more people. Use “I” messages, be caring and respectful, be a good listener. • Refusal skills: use a firm voice, explain why, offer alternatives, stand your ground, leave if necessary. • Conflict Resolution-cooperation & problem solving!

  3. Lesson 2 Building Health Skills • Self Management taking charge of your own health. Practicing healthful behaviors-good health habits. • Managing Stress- exercising, relaxation, and managing time efficiently! • Advocacy- taking action to influence others to address a health-related concern or to support a health related belief.

Lesson 2 Decisions & Goal Setting • Achieving good health begins with making responsible decisions. • Decision making skills are steps that enable you to make a healthful decision. • H (Healthful) – any risks? • E (Ethical) – does it reflect my values? • L (Legal) – is it against the law? • P (Parent Approval) – would my parents approve?

  5. Lesson 2 Decision Making • Steps of the decision making model: • 1. State the situation. • 2. List the options • 3. Weigh the Possible Outcomes • 4. Consider Values • 5. Make a decision and Act on it. • 6. Evaluate the decision.

Lesson 2 Goal Setting • Goals those things you aim for that take planning and work. • Short Term Goal: can be reached in a short period of time. • Long Term Goal: is a goal that you plan to reach over an extended period of time. • Set up an Action Plan- a multistep strategy to identify and achieve your goals!

  7. Lesson 2 Developing an Action Plan • Write down a specific and realistic goal! • List the steps to reach the goal. • Who will help you? • Time frame for completion. • Evaluate your progress with checkpoints. • Reward yourself for achieving your goal!

  9. Lesson 3 Being a Literate Consumer • Health consumer is someone who purchases or uses health products or services-to make informed buying decisions. • Advertising is a written or spoken media message designed to interest consumers in purchasing a product or service.

Lesson 3 Comparison Shopping • Comparison Shopping or judging the benefits of different products by comparing several factors, such as quality, features and cost. • Warranty is a company’s or a store’s written agreement to repair a product or refund your money if the product doesn’t function properly.

  12. Lesson 4 Managing Consumer Problems • If you are using a product correctly and it isn’t working the way you expected, read the warranty to learn how the manufacturers requires you to return it. If you are not satisfied with the response to your efforts ask for help from one of the following organizations: Better Business Bureau; Consumer Advocates; Local, State and Federal Government Agencies.

Lesson 4 Managing Consumer Problems • Malpractice – health care professionals fail to provide adequate treatment, they don’t meet acceptable standards. • Health Fraud is the sale of worthless products or services that claim to prevent disease or cure other health problems. Look out for claims like: “Secret Formula”, “Miracle Cure”, “Overnight Results”, “All Natural”, “Hurry, this offer expires soon”.

  14. Lesson 4 Managing Consumer Problems • To protect yourself from health fraud, you can: • Check out the product’s service claim with a doctor or health professional. • Get an opinion from family or friends. • Check out the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been complaints? • Check with a professional health organization about the claim. For example the American Heart Association.
