  1. Scientific Method Stations

  2. Testable Question or not? Can I create an experiment to find the answer?Does it provide data to be measured? Is it answered with a yes or no? Write if the question is TESTABLE or NOT. • Which gum makes the biggest bubble? • Which gum is the most expensive? • How does an eye work? • Which brand of football gloves are the stickiest? • Which brand of football gloves are made with leather? • Does fertilizer affect plant growth? • At which height will water splatter the largest diameter? • Can I make a volcano with baking soda and vinegar?

  3. Problem Create a problem for each of the pictures 10. 9. 11.

  4. hypothesis Discover the Hypothesis! • Place all the cards face down in the middle of the table in order. • Choose 5 cards at a time and flip them over. • Read the words aloud to the group. • Make a hypothesis, or guess, at what you think the story is about. • Leave these 5 cards flipped up. • Now, flip over 5 morecards. (You will now have 10 cards ) • Read all 10 words aloud. • Make a NEW hypothesis, or guess, at what you think the story is about.

  5. Variables Identify the variables! Patty Power Mr. Krabbs wants to make Bikini Bottoms a nicer place to live. He has created a new sauce that he thinks will reduce the production of body gas associated with eating crabby patties from the Krusty Krab. He recruits 100 customers with a history of gas problems. He has 50 of them (Group A) eat crabby patties with the new sauce. The other 50 (Group B) eat crabby patties with sauce that looks just like new sauce but is really just mixture of mayonnaise and food coloring. Both groups were told that they were getting the sauce that would reduce gas production. Two hours after eating the crabby patties, 30 customers in group A reported having fewer gas problems and 8 customers in group B reported having fewer gas problems. Which people are in the control group? What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable?

  6. Variables Identify the variables! Slimotosis Sponge Bob notices that his pals Gary and Mr. Krabbs are suffering from slimotosis, which occurs when algae forms a thick mucus layer on their hands and feet. Patrick tells him that rubbing seaweed on the hands and feet is the perfect cure, while Sandy says that drinking Dr. Kelp will be a better cure. Sponge Bob decides to test this cure by rubbing Gary with seaweed for 1 week and having Mr. Krabbs drink Dr. Kelp for 1 week. After a week of treatment, the slime on Gary is gone! What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable?

  7. Materials Create a list of the materials that are present below. Be specific! 1.

  8. Materials 2. Rewrite these materials so they could be listed in a science experiment • Water • Piece of paper • Soda • Piece of candy • Box of cereal • Shoe • Water Container • Tape

  9. procedure 1. 2. 3. 4.

  10. procedure Put the procedure in the correct order 4. • Problem: Do different types of music have an effect on heart rate? • Wait 1 minute in silence. • Repeat steps 4 -7 for each of the remaining types of music. • Create Data Collection Chart • Stop music and measure pulse for 10 seconds. Record in chart. • Multiply x6 to find heart rate per minute. Record in chart. • Listen to the first type of music for 2 minutes. • Measure pulse for 10 seconds. Record in chart • Multiply x6 to find heart rate per minute. Record in chart

  11. data 1. Create a data table with the following information

  12. results Mary wanted to record how many hours the television was in use in her home everyday. She recorded the information in the data table. Use this info to create the appropriate graph. *** Remember the graph that shows changes over time**** 1.

  13. conclusion After reading the hypothesis and studying the results of the experiment, write a conclusion. *was the hypothesis supported or not? *give proof of support using the data *identify possible errors *What other experiments can be done with the same materials? 1.
