The trail of memories we leave for others Pastor Shane L. Johnson, D.Min. Memorial Day Sunday, 2010
Question! • Whose memory do you want to leave your imprint on? • What do you want this/these person(s) to remember you for?
My answer… • Who do you want to remember you?My wife, my children, my church family, my mentees, my students, a few close friends… • What do you want them to remember you for?- that he loved his Lord, wife, children, church family, students and friends, in that order- that he was a man of principle- that he enjoyed life
Our text- 1 Cor 11.24-26 • 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the LORD's death until he comes.
Regarding the text… • Jesus took some of the most common elements of His day to fabricate a memoriala loaf of breada jug of wine • “every time you eat bread and drink wine, think of, reconnect with the memory of, me” • After Jesus ascended into Heaven, and when the disciples sat to eat a meal and reached for the bread or the wine, what do you suppose went through their minds regarding Him?
We tend to imprint people regarding… • What we value or hold dear • Those things that we don’t like • The types of people we like • The types of people we dislike • What gives us real joy- Kathy and her flowers • What makes us sad • What makes us angry
Questions we need to live with • If I had three months to live, what would I do? • If I died today, who would grieve? • What kind of void would I leave? • What will my legacy be? • What will the material possessions I leave behind say about what I valued? • What will the people I leave behind say about my values- those things I stood for or against? • What things, actions or events would cause people to think me?
