Biography • Born on March 20th, 1811Augusta Country, Virginia. • Died on July 7th, 1879 , Kansas City, Missouri. • He was the first Professor of Art at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. • He was luminism painter which is a style of painting that is characterized by effects of lighting in landscapes, through the use of aerial perspective, and concealing visible brushstrokes.

  5. Location of the Piece • Located in the Stark Museum of Art, in Orange Texas, United States. • Was made in 1845. • Originally 74.2 X 92.7 cm.

Art Analysis • This luminism art piece is full of irony and is an oil on canvas piece. • The irony of a style of painting that is all about concealing and deceit, the brushstrokes hidden within, yet the light is the basis of the message. • The irony of Guerilla warfare a style of warfare based on concealment and surprise attacks yet the man is clearly visible in the painting. • The irony of a title called The concealed Enemy, even though he is clearly shown in the painting.

  8. Message of the Piece • Light is generally used to reveal the unknown. • The light is shining down on the Indian revealing him. • Light is force of nature that is incapable of thought. Yet the light clearly finds the Indian. • The light is symbol of hope. • The message is if the light can find the enemy even without a brain, so can you. • A luminism piece that is full of irony.
