  2. What is FTL? • Not a real diagnosis • Term used to describe a social phenomenon • Lacking the skill to fully transition from adolescence to adulthood • Much deeper problem than just laziness

  3. Why is it a Problem? • Strains marriages • Robs young adults of dignity • Creates financial strain on parents • Changes the dynamic between parents and adult children • Effects job market and housing market

Statistics • 45% of YA ages 18-34 live with parents – even though they are employed • A recent report from real estate hub Zillow estimated nearly 10 million Americans between the ages of 24 and 34 – about 21.4 percent of that age group – still lived with their parents in 2014, based on an analysis of the most recent data from the Census Bureau.   6. Common Signs • Anxiety • Low tolerance for distress • Apathy • Unable/Unwilling to plan for future • Avoidance • Intentional distraction to avoid stressors • Addiction/Substance Abuse • Video Games, Porn, Marijuana, Alcohol

  7. Anxiety • Difficulty with managing tasks and time • Common stress presents as overwhelming anxiety • Overwhelmed very easily • Presents in two ways • Explosive • Shut Down

  8. Apathy • Only focuses and works on things that are pleasant • Difficulty giving attention to difficult things • Tendency to give up with task becomes hard

  9. Avoidance • Procrastination • Video Games/ Social Media • Unwilling/Unable to face problems head on without help • Tends to outsource to parents

  10. Addiction • Technology • Video Games • Porn • Social Media • Drugs • Alcohol

  11. Prelaunch Problems • Too much direction • No struggle • No confidence building opportunities • Independent Projects • Job • Recovering Independently from failure

  12. Kids needs are prioritized • Transferring fear about future • Unrealistic goals for future • Instant gratification • Haven’t learned how to be bored

  13. What Do We Do? • Boundaries • Set expectations and provide consequences • Become a coach • Be a resource of information • Slowly withdraw your support • Allow them to build up their tolerance • Ask questions more than you give answers

  14. Give them responsibility • Allow them to struggle and fail • Feel free to say “No” • Technology free family time • Share some of your struggles and how you overcame
