Bad Design

This proposal, presented by Joy D. Barbara, focuses on the inadequacies of traditional stop markers at intersections, which often fail to physically stop vehicles, leading to congestion and accidents. With 12% sideswipe, 42% rear-end, and 28% broadside collisions, it's evident that current designs are not sufficient. The solution is a barrier system that provides a clear visual and physical indication of where vehicles should stop, synchronized with traffic lights—lowered on green and raised on red—to improve safety and flow at signalized intersections.

  1. Bad Design Intersection Stop Markers Presented By Joy D. Barbara

  2. Designed to be a permanent visual signal that shows where a vehicle should safely stop

  3. The Problem • Line does not physically stop vehicles • No room for vehicles to turn • Cars over the line unable to back up in heavy traffic • Chain-reaction • Traffic STOPS • Congestion INCREASES • ACCIDENTS OCCUR

  4. Most common types of collisions at signalized intersections Sideswipe 12% Rear End 42% Broadside 28%

  5. A barrier would give motorists a visual and physical reminder of where to stop

  6. The gate would be timed to work with the traffic lights, DOWN on Green, UP on Red
