  2. District 5300’s Efforts • Gates Foundation two-to-one match, up to US$35 million per year, through 2018 • Strike Out Polio had 160 attend on August 23 from 5300 and 5330 and great sponsorships • March to End Polio with District 5330 • Rescheduled to March 7, 2015

  3. Where we Stand • In 1985 there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries • In 2013 there were 416 cases and three endemic countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria

Where We Stand • Through 8/12/14 there were 139 cases in 9 countries • Pakistan and Guinea have exported the virus internationally since May • Other 2014 “exporters” include Syria, Cameroon • Countries infected by Polio in 2014 include: Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Iraq, Israel, Somalia and Nigeria • Polio detected in sewage in Sao Paulo

Where We’re Doing • Rotary Supports WHO Director-General’s call for Public Health Emergency Declaration • Pakistan, Syria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Afghanistan • Rotary releases $43.6 million to fight polio in Africa, Asia and Middle East for immunization, surveillance and research • http://www.endpolio.org/advocacy
