  1. Codes and conventions of an interview

  2. Camera WorkEither medium close ups or close ups are used during an interview as it allows the audience to see the emotion and body language of the interviewee. In this image you can see a medium close up being used for an interview.

  3. InterviewerThe interviewer will nearly always be out of the shot so the main focus can be on the interviewee. They tend to not be seen or heard. IntervieweeThe interviewee will rarely be in the centre of the shot, they are either positioned to the left or the right. The interviewee wont use direct address, they will speak to the interviewer who will be asking them questions. If there is more than one person being interviewed and it cuts between the two, they will purposely alternate sides so the audience can recognise the change easily. The interviewee will always wear suitable attire, it tends to link with the theme of the documentary eg. A war documentary will feature war heroes/soldiers.

  4. CutawaysCutaways will be used during an interview for two reasons.1. To break up the interview to allow a change so that the audience wont get bored of the same thing. 2. To avoid jumps when editing out all the unwanted shots of the documentary. It makes the documentary seem smooth as the interviewee may have messed up. LightingThe lighting of the interview is crucial. The camera will never face a direct light source eg. A window or lamp behind the interviewee as it creates silhouettes. You can see here that the man isn’t as clear due to the direct light source behind him.

  5. GraphicsGraphics are used during an interview to allow the audience to know the interviewee. The graphics will definitely show their name and occupation which in turn shows their relevance to the documentary. Mise – en – sceneThe background of an interview will either be relevant or suitable to the theme of the documentary. If it isn't Chromakey can be used to create a suitable background. It reinforces the theme of the documentary. Eg. An interview with a nurse may have a hospital background. The props will always be relevant to the theme of the documentary as it connotes the message.
